Absinth....

This is totally off topic, but I'm not sure who else to ask and couldn't find anything online about it.

Apparently Absinth is legal in Canada. Are there any bars in downtown area that serve it -- and how much could I expect a drink to cost?

I looked for it a few times when I was there, but never had any luck.

I've heard the stuff in canada is pretty watered down though, compared to stuff in Europe -- but I'd still like to give it a try...

Any tips?

Is a form of alcohol. It kinda tastes like sambuca -- but is supposed to make you trip or something like that.

They have a "clean" version in the US. It tastes nasty, but hey -- its worth it to try the real thing.

The Absinthe you'll find here is not all that different from what you'll find in the States. You'll be too drunk to notice (or be conscious) by the time you've had enough Thujone to affect you.

If you want the "real" experience, go to Prague.

Best regards,

Thats kinda what I figured. I do have a high resistance to alcohol though (years of practice). Any idea how much a drink with it costs in Toronto?

There was an article in The Star on bars in GTA serving absinthe last Sunday. If you do a google search for, absinthe+toronto, it should be easy to find. Pretty pricey stuff though, nearly $90 a bottle, with drinks anywhere from $8 to $12 a pop. Be careful that you get this from a reputable source. A wrong mix of herbs and alcohol can be very toxic.

Here's a link about absinthe in general.

I would not say the stuff tastes like sambuca. It's some of the nastiest shit I've ever tried to drink. That's why it's traditionally drunk watered down and with sugar, but even with that, ugh. And at least the stuff I had did not have any effects beyond what you'd expect from very strong alcohol.

Absinthe

For info
http://www.feeverte.net/index.html

There's a place on Yonge/Empress, just a bit north of the Yonge Silvercity, almost right next to MacD, called THE OIL BAR.
They serve it there, and used to have Absinthe night last year, every Friday I think.

Tried it there once months ago, didn't do the sugar thing btw. I believe it was about 8 loon. LCBO sells them but don't think we have the real nasty kind in Canada though.

Do a search on "Absinthe " here, wrong hole posted a good thread a long while ago.

Incidentally, he offered the ear to a local SP after she told him that his love for her was not mutual.

Mmmm, the oil bar. I must check this place out. I'll be in town for like 5 days, and if all goes well -- I won't be sober for 1 minute of it. ;)

Any liquor (as Absinthe) that contains 75% alcohol, if taken regularly, has severe medical side effects, usually in the form of paranoia (pink elephants or pink mice are the popular results) and blindness. There are also some amount of wormwood's thujone in Absinthe, which is believed to be hallucinating especially in combination with alcohol.

Absinthe was therefore banned, 1905 in Belgium, 1907 in Switzerland, 1913 in Italy, 1912 in the US and 1915 in France. A watered down version with 45% alcohol and without the wormwood's thujone is safe and available as for example Pernod, which mixed with cold water creates a milky drink that is quite lovely.

I'm astounded by this. I didn't think you could buy anything at the LCBO that was 70% per volume. No pricing information on the Vintages website, but if you call customer service and give them the 6 digit product number, they'll hook you up.
