http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/air-canada-centre-changing-name-scotiabank-arena-next-summer/

Wow. Starting next summer the Air Canada Centre will now be known as the Scotiabank Arena. :| .. This year there is just too many changes going on in the city and I'm starting to lose track. I remember going to the ACC as a kid to watch hockey and it was the best experience ever. The big arena - the hot dogs and snacks- the chill in the air & the screaming fans each cheering for their team.

I haven't been there in years but I was just wondering what everybody thought about this? ? Do you think its a good idea ? Do you think after the 20 year agreement with Scotiabank they will go back to being the ACC? What is your favorite memory at the ACC ?

Discuss.

I haven't read the article but it's most like a case of Air Canada not being able to afford the amount MLSE was asking after their contract ended. The name change makes no difference to me and it won't change anything as far as the Leafs and Raptors go. The name will go to whichever corporation pays the most.

My best times I've ever spent at the ACC has been when someone takes me to a Leafs game and I don't have to pay $500 to watch a hockey game and drink shitty draft in plastic cups for $20 each. Don't get me wrong, I'm an avid Leafs/hockey fan but the prices are insane!

Air Canada was paying $4 million a yr. Scotiabank is paying $800 million over 20 yrs. That's about $40 million a yr. Maple Leaf Sports is pulling in hundreds of millions of dollars a yr. but poor Leaf fans are still paying thru the ass for tickets and you can bet they will continue with the yearly increase in ticket prices because they claim they're not making enough money. I hate the Leafs but I'd love to own a piece of that corporation.

I really wish Maple Leaf Foods had bought the naming rights...

Air Canada was paying $1.5 million a year.

I suppose, in time, it will also lose The Hangar nickname.

I guess corporate name changes are to be expected but I still refer to it as Skydome rather than Rogers Centre

Bell and Rogers are happy but what does BNS get for $800 million? Is having your name on the door worth that much money?

I'm still pissed that they changed the name of Skydome!
Nah, I really just pissed that they gave it away to Teddy.

Have never been to the ACC and never will. I have no interest in sports and would never pay the kind of prices to watch them. Went to Skydome once to watch a Jays game, they lost, but that was only because a friend of mine had free tickets and was long before Rogers acquired it. I hate Rogers so won't be going there again.

I was really pissed off that they called it Centre. What is this, a fucking mall? And then, they put that idiotic statue in front of it. Other places put up statues of great players- even the crappy Leafs, but the Jays put a dead corporate cunt on a pedestal.

Maybe some ethnic group will find something wrong with that statue and protest that it be removed. Seems to be the norm in North America lately.

lol wow. so many angry opinions LOL !

Change is inevetiable and their is nothing we can do about it . However some of these names have great significance or importance to torontarians for whatever reason.

Mr Piggy - it does not matter if they win or lose to go and watch a game is all about the experience and supporting your town/ country. Whether they win or lose remember they are playing for YOU & a little bit for themselves but mainly the fans keep them going

Who knows maybe after this deal they wil change it back to ACC. I guess well have to wait and see

I know it doesn't matter who wins or loses as it's just a game. I enjoyed going but that's because the tickets were free. I will never pay to support sports because the players are way overpaid with these muti million dollar contracts.
I did at one time watch hockey and couldn't wait for Hockey Night in Canada to come on the tv. That was way back when there was only 6 teams though. When they expanded the league to I think it went to 12 teams, I lost interest and never got it back. If I'm at someones place and they have sports on I sort of watch it, when I'm not nodding off, but don't get excited and start screaming and jumping up and down like an idiot.

They have multimillionaire contracts because they are signed for an amount of years... so obviously they are going to have to be compensated for it. All real sports fans yell and scream and jump up and down even when they are at home watching sports. That just something real sports fans do...

So what you're saying is that real sports fans = acting like uncontrollable idiots and some even becoming violent while watching sports. Don't see the fun or entertainment is that. To each they're own I guess.

Actually sports are one of the greatest evils in our society
Sad but true

Back in the day it was nothing like this, but then again even in the 80s players had lower salaries than a university grad should expect
The 70s were even worse

Apparently
Even small cities sell naming rights for millions these days
I just roll my eyes

Applaud you for not being a corporate shill

Toronto fans were mocked for years at how silent they were during games and how clueless they were regarding strategy
If you are a hockey fan never sit in the ACC box seats, you will just cry

lol judging by your posts your a negative person. No that's not what I'm saying about "real sports fans" what I'm saying is that they are PASSIONATE & who are you to tell them what they can / can not do? No one died and made u god. If you don't act like that - cool, all the power to you ; but you have no right calling other people idiots. IMHO

LOL didn't realize when I made this thread that there would be so many negative people and ideas on it... YES - we all know THE LEAFS SUCK. I learned that when I was about ten. That was fifteen years ago.... However I still cheer for them because I am a born and raised Torontonian and I will always support my town/ country/ teams/ government, etc. I don't care for negative energy in my life & if they lose oh well - there is always next year.

However I'm not talking about FANS. I'm talking about a name change. so I would appreciate if everyone would stick to what they think about the NAME CHANGE lol. thank you. :)
