I tried to update my laptop today and I've run into problems.

First, my McAfee was out of date so I uninstalled it and planned to reinstall it fresh. But when I go to McAfee's site and download the program, it downloads but then the download window closes and no further installation occurs. There is no option to save the download anywhere; it's like a Run or Setup command.

So I figured maybe first I need to update Windows, which I haven't updated since Feb. But when I go to Windows Update, I get a message that:

"Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue:

A) Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
B) Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem"

I click on A) and it cycles me back to the original message. Clicking on B) doesn't provide any helpful info.

I figured maybe there's something wrong with ActiveX so I downloaded an ActiveX Manager program and it tells me that Microsoft ActiveX Plugin v.1.0 has a missing file.

Does anyone know what's going on and/or how I can download a fresh ActiveX? It almost seems like Microsoft isn't recognizing the validity of my Windows XP and won't let me download updates. Windows came installed and I checked the Genuine Adantage thingy and it recognizes the key as legit (which it is).

Yep , Microsoft's update last week screwed up some ActiveX controls, (hhctl.ocx and .dll) especially if you have RealTek audio. Some improper system memory allocations.

My niece brought in her PC on the weekend because screen went blank on bootup. Display driver was affected. She had the hhctl.ocx error.

Found the patch on Microsoft...all fixed now.

I fixed the problem. Apparently when I uninstalled McAfee it caused a problem with the registry. If you google "Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer" you'll get a number of hits that resolve the problem.

In short, I had to type "regsvr32 msxml3.dll" (without the quotes) in the Start > Run window and all is now good.

Thanks for the help guys.
