Adding a Rogers Channel?

I want to add TSN HD with Rogers for the upcoming World Juniors. Unfortunately it comes in a $10.95 package that is otherwise garbage (wish I could get just the one channel but oh well...)

If I order for the next month and then cancel after the World Juniors end, is there any obligation on my part? i.e., penalties for canceling so soon?

Does anybody know if you order their Digital VIP package, does it come with TSN HD? I recently investigated this and I could see that TSN was in the package as a regular digital channel, but when you look at the list of HD channels you get TSN HD was not in that list? If I recall correctly, TSN & TSN2 are on a free preview every year around the time of the World Junior tournament.

Wait until tourny time to sign up.

They were last year but I haven't seen anything to indicate that will happen this year. Last year the free preview started in November.

The universe is unfolding as Rogers intended. The whole point is to generate revenue. If you buy and cancel, you will spend the next two months trying to get your billing straighten out. Is it really worth the hassle?

I noticed that you don't get A&E HD even with an HD package. You need to pay extra for select channels.

I recall Ted Rogers saying that he didn't think that Canadians wanted a lot of cable companies around like in the States lest service and reliability is sacrificed. Pretty self-serving if you ask me. I can understand oligopolies for banks but cable/telecommunication companies?

We are getting snowed every day, and they're laughing all the way to the bank.

The government royally screwed the Canadian owned and managed cellphone companies by allowing a bunch of foreigners into the Canadian market. Now, profits that would have stayed in Canada are going to places like Egypt.

They still have to pay Cdn taxes on those profits, plus they would have to invest in Canada somewhat to sell their product. Aren't we better off from the competition? How many cell phones are actually made in Canada anyways? (Are you pulling my leg Rockslinger?).

You might have noticed that these foreign invaders are only interested in the "target rich" centres like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Do you see them in Moose Jaw or Wawa?

Did the Canadian companies start with their networks operating in Moose Jaw or Wawa all those years ago? I very much doubt it. Building a network is expensive and it's unreasonable to expect full coverage to start with.. once a customer base has been established I have no doubt they will expand.

Yes they do.. in fact if you have an HDTV you can get High Def with your old antenna.. that's how I get my TV.

The only reason we have telecom and transportation in those areas are because companies like Bell and Air Canada were given regulated monopolies in certain regions that obligated them to provide service. Once you have competiton, it's a different business model. Low cost drives the market and creates winners and losers.

This is Canadian history; I'm not arguing ideology of competition vs monopolies.

These foreign invaders are only interested in turning a quick profit, same as FIDO and MICROCELL before them. Be a pain in the ass and hope the big guys buy you out at a hefty premium. Do not ever forget they are FOREIGN INVADERS, they do not live in the community and have no vested interest in Canada.

Well basically it's very expensive to lay cable to your house, and very inefficient. You can get a equivalent service to Rogers cable from Bell satellite or other satellite provider in the gray market, or even digital antenna.

But the technology is moving so fast that even a good regulator couldn't keep up. So between netflix and other digital options, you can replace alot of the content you get from Rogers.

This stuff is complex.

And re: Bell not getting hurt...part of it is their ability to adapt. There are a lot of companies that go under when the rules get changed....railroads, Canadian Pacific airlines, Wardair, etc. etc.

Wardair was a strange situation. The company was going broke when PWA came along and offered their shareholders a hefty takeover premium.

You're kidding me? We had one of those circular, enclosed aerials put up on top of our old tower at the cottage. Haven't checked it out, but if it works for a few channels, no need to buy from Express Vu.

That is the plus side of the monopoly/oligopoly issue which they take advantage of - we subsidize those remote areas AND THEN SOME!

When Rogers can buy sports teams and venues, etc. that means they're doing very, very well.
