Google and Samsung can't be more different , Samsung and Apple has a lot in common, that they make money from selling hardware. Google model is not just ad based but google advertisers aren't a few big companies, but millions of small businesses. Whereas Yahoo and Excites , a long forgotten search engine focused on getting business from big corporations and failed.

the new economy will be about individualization. Ex Excite CEO once said: 20th centuery business model was about a dozen markets of millions of customers, but new internet economy is about millions of markets of a dozen customers.

Apples ecosystem approach is no different, it caters to a million markets of a dozen customers, all about individualization. Its standarzation of gadgets is just to provide a platform. But how long can it make money from selling platform hardware remain to be seen. People always are willing to pay for new technology when it just came out but eventually depreciates just like computers. Money will always be in contents and adverts.

I read that the new Android release coming will have the option to do Google searches of phone numbers and display results if incoming phone numbers are unknown to your contact list. Now you will know if it is a return call from your plumber or a telemarketer.

High end Samsung or iPhone are the same cost - there is no cost advantage to Android.

Google has a great business model, it's just an ad and data mining business model that is driven by great web services (search, email, maps….) and increasingly mobile OS (Android), no one should be confused about that by self driving cars or other "innovations". The fact that their motto is don't be evil is a tad ironic given the NSA stuff that's going on.
