Have to buy a new TV to replace my 10 year old 46" Samsung LED...

To me, the market place is filled with jargon, acronyms and all kinds of confusing shit!

I use my TV to watch golf, baseball, tennis and, mostly, for streaming YouTube, opera, concerts, etc.

Sound quality is not important because I have it hooked up to my home theater system, but picture quality is very important... I have in mind a +/- 55" inch screen but am flexible.

Samsung? Sony? LG? Any other? Specific model/s?

Any one have suggestions?

Thanks very much.

Last time I bought was 13 years ago. A sharp 46".

I went in with this opinion. I purchased top of the line thinking 10 years with it. And have 3 more as well.

Check review sites. Which ever one has the best wins.

Check out Consumer Reports, available from the library, also available using your library card through the internet.
Mine is a 46" Samsung which I purchased many years ago, when the Olympics were in Beijing. And so far it's still going strong. Myself, I would stay away from LG. My Sony electronics are have held up well.

Review sites are good, but many of them depend on ad dollars from electronics companies. So they may not be completely honest. Consumer Reports does not accept ad money, so they remain independent.

Or better still, chuck the TV and go outside- the colour may not be as good, but you get real 3D.

Just before Christmas I bought a 60" Sony TV from Costco. 4K, Smart TV, just over $1000 with tax. So far I'm quite pleased with it.

I'm loyal to Sony. Willing to pay a little more for better quality.

I picked up a 55" Sony 4K a couple of years ago and it is great. Especially for watching sports as there is little to no motion blur or ghosting. I have a Vizio in the bedroom and it sucks for sports 9motion blur).

The model I have is a smart TV and it has the android system in it. I was able to download the KODI app and it did work fine (I have not checked to see if it still works). I view a lot of you tube videos on it and everything streams nice. I also have it hard wired to the internet.

I have an old plasma in the living room and sports is great on it, however it is starting to slowly dim.

This site is pretty good for TV reviews:

Good luck!

Here's where my money would go right now for the best picture quality (higher end of price range), pick one (no particular order):

Although I do prefer the Sony for the Android interface.

1) LG OLED LG C7-Series 4K OLED TV
2) Samsung QLED Samsung Q9F 4K QLED TV
3) Sony A1E OLED TV

If money is no object:
LG Signature OLED 65W7P W7

I have both Samsung and Sony and great picture quality for both. Samsung a little older 1080p and Sony is 4K. Sony had a problem with its motherboard and the warranty folks sent a guy to my house to replace and recalibrate it. Didn’t have to take it in or waste time with retailer. Happy with my purchases and the pricing. Don’t buy the newest or highest models as you will pay through the nose.

2 years ago I picked up a 55 inch Samsung series 6 6300 from Best Buy when it went on sale $900. They also gave me a break on the additional 2 year extended warranty. Actually I was shocked and did not know you could haggle at BB. The reg price was $1300 and that 2yr extd listed for $250. I took a shot and asked the sales dude for a reduced price on the extd thinking he'll knock off $50 but he took $200 ontop of the already $400 off the tv.

I picked this tv because it had great ratings on rtings.com for picture vs value. It is not 3D or 4K but I did not need those features and do not regret the purchase. The tv has been amazing so far with no issues. Of course the tv speakers suck so I picked up a Yamaha soundbar + sub. With my android box I can't complain. Sports, movies, internet has been excellent :thumb:

If money was a non factor I would go with an OLED 65" and a Sonos Playbar + Sub

They somehow always try to sell you the extended warranty, as it either boosts their commission, or they have certain numbers to fulfil for the month.
Well the extended warranty in 99% of the cases is meaningless, as nothing really goes wrong after the normal warranty ends. These TVs can last at least 5 years. I have an LCD that is more than 10 years old.
So in reality you have paid $50 more for the TV as they have to show the extended warranty at a full price, but they can then offer you the further discounted rate of $200.

My credit card doubles the warranty for free.

Costco. 2 year warranty standard. $50-100 more (depending on the size of the tv you buy) gets you an additional 3 years. So 5 years total.

Costco warranty service is concierge. So someone comes to your door to take it, fix it, and bring it back.

Avoid Best Buy, 2001 Audio Video and any other place unless you have to have a tv only they carry. Their warranties are terrible, short and a rip off.

- Get a Samsung, LG, or Sony. In that order
- 4k
- HDR
- Full array/direct back lighting. Avoid edge lit lighting
- Higher end models have excellent motion plus. It can be turned off. It does that soap opera effect, which is awesome for sports
- If you have an older tv from years ago, don't be afraid to get a bigger model. The newer tvs have very thin bezels (the border of the tv). So a 65" tv is the same dimensions as an old 58 or 60". But now you get more inches of tv screen because the old tvs had bezels probably double the thickness
- OLED is a totally different class of tv. The best looking screens, but cost probably $500-1,000 more than a non-OLED of the same size. Do it if you have the cash to spend, but to me not worth it

Best TV quality for the money is Vizio. Check out the 65". CNET and Pcmag TV of the year. Bought mine at Costco for 1400 before Xmas, it's fucking awesome. Do your research before buying

What about a TV for a sunny room.

I seem to recall that some are better than others in sunshine.

As Carvher said, Vizio is a good brand too. I'd say not as good as the top tier Jap/Korean brands, BUT the value is excellent with Vizio. The tvs are usually $100s cheaper than a Samsung/LG/Sony.

Reviews seem pretty good for Vizio too, although a bit more hit and miss than the above brands.

As some of us said, Costco. 90 day refund policy and THE BEST warranty service.

BB ext warranty covers 4yrs plus they come to my place to service the unit. If they cannot fix it within 60 days they will replace it. Costco also has a decent warranty but I've always found the selection pretty limited. The models I was after they never carried. My tv has been trouble free so and the pic quality is amazing. Made me a Samsung fan. My new washer/dryer is Samsung which I love and last moth purchased a Galaxy S9+, love it.

Every other tv that I had was a Sony which was good also and lasted very long. My 1994 32" Trinitron lasted over 20 years. I was waiting for it to die so I could buy a big lcd but the friggin thing would keep working. I eventually gave up and gave it to my landlord when I moved. They were very happy to have it. Retired couple that was still using a 20"

At the time I compared/researched tv's for a few months before picking this one. I checked out most brands within $500 of mine. For the features I wanted and feel of unit I choose Samsung. The Vizio's I compared had good pic quality but I never liked the feel of the until. The menu's, the way the buttons on the remote felt and slow speed going from one channel to another. I'm very picky when it comes to my electronics and I like them responsive going from one screen to the other with little to no black screen delay. This was a few years ago and i'm sure Vizio has improved so it would be a good pickup.

Now a days you can't really go wrong with most brands. I here good things regarding Hisense 4K ULED also
