Giving "managers" the autonomy to make decisions, with the understanding that they alone will get the credit or answer to the criticism, is the best approach to leadership.
Regarding the pirate incident, he took credit where it was due. More correctly, it was given to him; I don`t recall a "Mission Accomplished" banner. He alone gave the final "green light" to the SEALs and would have to live with that decision no matter the outcome. It was only a "no brainer" because it was a success. If it had failed, in any one of a multitude of possible ways, he would have been in the center of a shitstorm. He knew this when he made his final decision. He also heaped credit on the SEALs themselves, and everybody involved, for the success of the operation.
