Was AJ banned initially? The article didn't mention that. In Canada if you want a broadcast licence you have to make application to the CRTC. From what I saw in the article that is what is happening. Didn't mention that a previous application was rejected.

I think people associate them with with being a terroist mouthpiece because it was AJ that always seem to air Osama's little advertisements first as well as the odd beheading tape thrown in for good measure. If that's the only time you hear their name it's understandable how people got this impression.

I can't comment as to whether they are any fairer than Fox News because I simply haven't seen much of their content. Fox News is a disgrace though.

Give it a try. I find it informative and farly balanced in its international news
coverage. I see no more bias in Al Jazeera then in BBC, which are the two
international news sources I monitor via the internet.

Al Jazeera wasnt formally banned in Canada, the CRTC through a whole list of misunderstanding decided to allow it but only with strict monitoring and censoring with what it deems hate speech. The problem is the cable companies here would have had to hire someone 24 hours a day to monitor and censor some looney self appointed leading Islamist, who when interviewed would start talking about infidels and the such, which when you see it and understand Arabic is really no different than what Ann Coulter or Bill O'Reilly do, the only difference is that Coulter and that crowd look and talk like us so its more acceptable.

But the CRTC completely ignored the fact that someone like Shaul Mofaz, former Israeli defence minister and prominent politician is also given time on that station to air his views.
