These novels are just a good start, recognizable due to the film adaptations, and both easy books to read. BR is an all time favourite movie. MR is okay and one of the few Cruise films I'll tolerate (certainly better than the treatment of Asimov's I, Robot).
I just don't like comparing BR and DADES. I enjoy both the movie and the book...But I refuse to compare them.

The biggest problem isn't in BR itself, but Scott's later admission that Deckard was a Nexus, which would destroy all dramatic tension between him and Batty. Despite that, Blade Runner: The Final Cut is a must have.
The man should have kept his bloody mouth shut, AFAIC.

1984

I am surprised very honest people at Terb :D
I didn't mention it, as I assumed it was still standard reading material in school...Which it was in my day. Along with A Brave New World.

And I think I still have my copy of 1984...Somewhere in the closet.

BD, now the joke's on me.

See overseas, well I mean east of Europe at least no one knows of 1984 nor is it tought in High School.

I just joked about it as honestly I have not read it, and according to study so do 42% people who say they have, making it the most lied about book as been read.

Now I am lookin forward to Richard Dawkins......

The Greatest Show on Earth

Anyone read that ???
Nope, but given what Dawkins has written in the past, and looking at the size of the book, I can predict it won't be a light read.

Finished the first chapter of Superfreakonomics (dealing with escorts). It's a good read. But I really like the way they described [high end] escorts -- they're the trophy wives that you rent by the hour. :D And who knew that pimps were actually useful (at least for street walkers in Chicago).
I just finished Superfreakonimics. It's a pretty short read (about 220 pages). If you liked the original, you're sure to like the sequel. I thought the epilogue was pretty apropos for Terb.

I'm inclined to write a review of William Gibson's Neuromancer trilogy (Neuromancer, Burning Chrome and Mona Lisa Overdrive)..But after reading Idoru and All Tomorrow's Parties, I think I'd like to reread the previous books. While those early books did have a considerable impact on the cyberpunk genre, I'd like to go over the quality of the writing again.

Now, my one bit of curiousity is...Where is our esteemed founder and why has she not posted up any reviews? Has it been because she's been practicing her vocal skills? :p

The Globe and Mail had a big section today where authors and other public figures named their favourite book of the decade. I noticed a number of people chose The Road.

(Oops, ahahooper's post above wasn't there when I started to write my comments. Anyway, what he said ....).

A few I have read recently:

Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Anne Dillard - need to be in the mood since this is a deeply spiritual and meditative book, not an easy read, not for everyone

The Sacred Book of the Werewolf, Victor Pelevin - a romance between Chinese werefox and a Russian werewolf in Moscow, pretty perverse, to thumbs up

Texas Hold'em - Kinky Friedman - all about Texas

The Tanners, Robert Walser, translated from German by Susan Bernofsky - light hearted comedy

Breakfast on Pluto, Patrick McCabe - can get the DVD too, all about a transvestite in London

When the Emperor was Divine, Julie Otsuka - an American family interred in Japanese camps during WW2

A Long, Long Way, Sebastien Barry - what's it mean to be Irish?

Nudge, Richard Thaler and Cass Sustein - how do people make choices?

Semi-random (word association) recommendation of the day: On The Road by Jack Kerouac. He claims it was written entirely in one writing session, with the help of what they used to call "speed", and on one very long piece of paper. (This was before word processors so he had to use a Medieval torture device called a "typewriter" which normally required the user to load each new sheet of paper manually.)

If you like detective novels try Robert Crais, Lawrence Block, and Robert B. Parker

Neil Peart (drummer from Rush) has written several books, including GhostRider...

On the night of August 10th, 1997, a police car drove down the laneway to Neil Peart's house. He lived in a secluded lakeside in Quebec with his wife of twenty years. The night before, they had said good-bye to their 19-year-old daughter as she drove off to university. The police officer brought devastating news. "Single car accident," he reported, "Dead at the scene." Both parents were deeply affected, but Jackie more so. She wanted to die. And within a year, she did. Cancer struck, and Neil found himself alone. He was a famous musician (the drummer and lyricist for Rush), he had success and possessions, but his life was changed forever in the short span of ten months.

Ghost Rider is a record of the next two years, as Peart went on a search for his future and dealt with the memories and heartbreak of his past. He climbed onto his BMW R1100GS motorcycle and set off down the road... to look for meaning, to look for peace, to look for a reason to live.
