Annoying Problem (Rant Ahead!!)

My next-door neighbour has a dog that barks a lot but thankfully usually not too excessively (especially now that she's getting really old) and not at night/early morning so I just deal with it. There have been times when she's woken me up in the morning but after 7 a.m. what can you do?

However, we were chatting today and she (my neighbour, not the dog LOL )told me that in the winter she's going to be getting a husky puppy and is going to send her to some sort of 'guard dog school'? Apparently the dog will be trained to be a guard dog and bark at any strangers that approach. All because my neighbour believes her garage is being broken into at night, though nothing has been stolen.?? I asked her if that meant the dog would be left outside all night and she replied "Oh yeah, she'll be outside 24/7". It's better than having an alarm."

Obviously, I'm fearing the worst - this dog would be pretty much right below my bedroom window and I'm a light sleeper. I already sometimes have problems with insomnia as it is. Isn't there some sort of law about having a (potentially barking) dog outside all night long? I'm not only worried about the noise but also the fact that this poor dog is probably going to end up being vicious (I doubt they're going to walk it or socialize it in any way) and there's a lot of kids around the neighbourhood. They actually have a young son so it surprises me that they would want to do this.

What can I do? Has anyone else had a similar problem and what did you do about it? I've looked a little into soundproofing rooms/windows but I really don't know much. I'm furious! :-(

Steal all the replacements as well! Eventually the neighbours will find it too costly and give up....

MC I read an article in the Toronto star about this very problem a couple of months ago.

It turns out this guy in Oshawa had a dog that barked literally all night. To make a very long story short the next door neighbour had a city by-law officer come over to his house.

Then the neighbour wound up taking the other neighbour with the dog to court. I'm not sure how the case turned out. I also think that the aggrieved neighbour also went around the neighbourhood getting other neighbours to sign a petition as well.

Good luck with everything.

It sounds like you're friendly enough with her, you should express your concerns about the noise - perhaps charm her into reconsidering?

I know it would work with me. :)

This is going to get ugly. You are up against the powerful 20 million strong "Dog Lobby" in Toronto:( . I have a raccoon living rent free in my garage and there is nothing I can legally do about it because of the powerful "Raccoon Lobby". Wish I had a magic wand for you.

Unfortunately, I have to agree.

No, "Dog People" do not listen to rational thought. Also, they can sleep through all that barking because they take the dog barking immune pill that is available only through the dog lover secret society.

Also your local SPCA should be able to offer you some advice on this issue as well.

You do have some rights and remedies. Unfortunately exercising them could be a slow and tiring (no pun intended) process. Looks like you have some sleepless nights in your future.

Killing the dog may be an option

Oh I dont mean a painful death.

I mean a nice dose of medication spread on a T BONe, that will gently put the dog to sleep.

Of course, drop the meat in unseen..as It is a crime that cannot be proven. And in fact is NOT a crime.

"Cruelty to Animals" is a criminal offence, but strangely, killing them is not. Now the charge would be Mischief, but you gotta prove that one!!!

SAY NOTHING..after planting the steak!!

BTW it IS cruel to leave a single..

...dog outside 24/7, even with access to a heated dog house.

They are pack animals, domesticated for some degree of human contact.

Dude, raccoons are practically impossible to kill, your only choice is buying a raccoon trap at home depot. Catch them and release them 20 to 30 km away from your house, somewhere there is a raven or etc.

I had a major problem last year with 5 raccoons, a whole family, I relocated them one buy one without doing any harm to them.

good luck.

and yes I was kidding about killing the dog.

kill the owner.

cheers.

If you own your home, you are screwed.

If you rent like a townhouse, then you can report the person with all the evidence to your landlord and hopefully you will have better results. People get kicked out of places all the time for making too much noise. Be it pets, music, fighting, sex etc.

But if you own, you will be hard pressed to get anything done. You would have to tape night after night after night showing the dog barking at 1,2 4am.

Barking during the day, you can't do anything about.

Good luck.
