By the way, what this thread has proved is that Toronto guys are more men than Montreal guys. Let me explain. A same thread last year was deleted on merb and people who participated got banned. The excuse of the moderator was simply we don't like guns here. Freedom of speech, manhood, too many boys raised by their mothers over there I guess.

I suspect that the Montréal École Polytechnique shootings in 1989 are still a bit too close to the bone.

However, there are plenty of hunters and firearms owners in Québec.

I have been interested in getting a hunting rifle, but I don't know where to take the gun courses in the GTA and when they are availabel. I.E spring sessions or what have you.

But I would really like some info on getting the Firearms license if any of you have it.

I have a Possession-Only Licence and apart from my air/pellet rifle that I got when I was in my teens, transfered my dad's semi-automatic 12 gauge Browning shotgun and 30.06 HP rifle to me. (He used to own a Franchi hp semi-automatic .22 rifle but it was stolen at the cottage years ago). Ammo is locked away and off site from the locked weapon store.

I have not taken the FAC course but is it a big deal?

I don't hunt but would be interested in going to a driving range.

FAC is the name of the "old system" A PO Licence means that you can own a gun and buy ammunition for it, but cannot purchase another firearm. Pretty damn stupid rule IMHO.

My license is for both restricted and unrestricted. I've had the police visit and look at where I keep the firearms locked up.

I took my first gun course when I was 15, doing the new course was a snap. But always remember where the "safe" spot is when taking the course and NEVER handle a gun if there is not a safe spot. Every instructor I've seen has tried to "trick" the class at some point during the course.

And why would you take a gun to a driving range? Unless you plan on playing "Skeet-Golf" that is.

Guns are my other hobby. I grew up with guns and I am a member of the NRA for 23 years, my dad registered me when I was 10!... plus a member at several gun clubs on both sides of the border.

Here is my present collection:

AR15, KCI Saiga conversion 7.62x39mm, Savage Model 10 .308, Sig P220r and P220r Compact .45acp

But my favorite is my Desert Eagle 50AE. Here is me with the Desert Eagle, behind my garage at the cottage:

Dessert Eagle is to guns what a Hummer is to cars. A big useless gun for guys that have balls bigger than their brains. The Dessert Eagle is uselessly big and expensive. It is not the most accurate pistol around. It has a very large handle that is hard to grip and a oddly shaped triangular barrel that is hard to holster.

I can't be bothered with real hunting (moose, deer) but I'd like to engage in some target shooting.

If all you want to do is some target shooting, get a nice .22 long rifle. It is all you need for putting holes in targets at a range, or making pop cans dance off the post on the "back 40". If you are shooting outdoors, ALWAYS have an appropriate backstop. Even a .22 can make it through 7 1" pine boards.

Outside of shooting ranges, a centrefire rifle over can not legally
be discharged in southern Ontario.(I think the boundary is somewhat
around Barrie)

I thought it was north of Orangeville but you could be right. A 30.06 round can go for what, five miles?

I'd have to ask a hunter friend, but I remember the days when my dad would go rabbit hunting on his own land in Vaughan, or when I went shooting with my cousin for ground hogs eating his dad's vegetable garden on a farm north of Bolton (Caledon) using a .22 bolt rifle.

I think the limit is .275

How much of a hassle was it to buy them?

I believe we have 8 or so in the house. One is mine, ones my wifes and our children claim the rest. Great for shooting each other in the backyard on a hot humid day . . . you did mean water guns right?
