Mercedes ML350 diesel. $0 down lease for 3 yrs will run you just shy of $1000 all in per month, if this is in your budget. The GL350 also is diesel, but will run you about $1400 a month.

Due to an aversion to diesel engines by 90% of the North American market , diesels in small trucks/SUV are rare. Unless you want to go big, ie F-250, you go import or old Toyota LandCruisers or Land Rovers. Chrysler did offer diesel Liberty's and Cherokees a few years back and MB does but you are almost dealing with opposite ends of the spectrum.

With all diesels, they don't break down a lot but when they do, the repairs aren't cheap.

What do you want it for work or pleasure?

I'm in the market also for a used one, but more for a work truck

Jeep Liberty CRD diesel 2.8L
4 cylinders European drive train, excellent fuel economy, about 8L/100km on the HWY and 10L in the city. Friendly insurance rate. Can pull a camping trailer or a 18 foot boat very easy.

If you have more cash you can go for the big brother Grand Cheroke diesel powered by the V6 Mercedes engine.

My all time favorite is VW Touareg V10 TDI.
Hard to find one because they were very expensive and sold poor on Canadian market. Now VW has a new V6 TDI on the market, much cleaner, much cheaper... but less power vs. the old dirty V10 TDI.

I currently drive a ML 350 diesel and have been very happy with it. The lease is almost up and I will either get another one or get an Audi Q7 diesel or BMW X5 diesel. I had an extended test drive of the Q7 and loved it. I have a friend with the BMW also very happy.

The Mercedes ML diesel is a fine vehicle and less $$$ than the BMW X5 diesel.

However, the X5 Diesel engine is a powerful thing of beauty and smooth torque. Like you have never experienced. Much better than the Mercedes in terms of powertrain.

But only worth the extra money if it is worth it to you
Test drive both and see which one you like better.
Do the MB and Audi involve the DEF additive or something else in the operating regime?

If you can wait apparently the MB GLK will be dieselized, and Mazda is bringing an SUV powered by it's new amazing Sky-D diesel engines within a year. So some nice stiff soon hopefully.

A member of my family has a MB SUV diesel, they check and top up an oxidizing agent in the system if necessary.

Any idea in percentage terms how much better mileage would be with the diesel?

There is a little thing going on at the Metro Convention Centre this week called the Canadian International Autoshow.
