I am running vista 64. The pc I have came with a free Win 7 upgrade. Is the upgrade pretty solid? is it worth it? Opinions?

TIA.

Don't know about the upgrade, but I've been running with Win 7 64 bit (full version, full install) since last year. It's solid and more stable than Vista.
Does it start up faster than Vista?

Yup. Win7 is quicker in startup. Also, office 2010 is zippier too when it starts up.

As for upgrade vs full install, I always recommend a full install if possible (its just cleaner and gets rid of all the junk). But if you need to do an upgrade, my only advise is to uninstall application you know you don't want/need anymore. And absolutely uninstall any antivirus applications before the upgrade, it'll save quite a bit of time.

Good luck!

Definitely worth the upgrade to W7

W7 boots up in 40 seconds, is solid and more stable.
Best to do a clean install, it's easy. Just save any files you want to another drive or ext drive.

Then for AV I put in MS Security Essentials. MSE is free, easy to use, scans fast and runs lean.

That said I still prefer Linux which runs even faster and better!....

Invest in an SSD drive, bootup time is less than 20 seconds (and thats on my notebook with a 1.4ghz ULV processor) and applications load up much quicker as well.

Fast is an understatement....I no longer have time to grab a coffee in the morning while my laptop boots up!!

From what i've read. The upgrade from vista to 7 is not bad at all. It's essentially the same operating system beneath but with a few major tweaks and upgrades. I have one PC that I upgraded, haven't had a single problem yet.

Recommend you wait until service pack one for Windows 7 comes out.

not needed at all. SP1 has been announced, it will be available as beta soon but wont be final untill later this year. it has been said to offer nothing other than a collection of all the current hotfixes and security updates plus a few minor tweaks.

I haven't encountered any problems with Win 7 at all. Much better than vista!!

"The final release is expected to hit both platforms sometime in Q4 2010, however it will not include any new features that are specific to Windows 7. "For Windows 7, SP1 will simply be the combination of updates already available through Windows Update and additional hotfixes based on feedback by our customers and partners," reads the official Windows Blog."

why? 7 is leaps and bounds better than vista already... and considering its the same kernel underneath, 7 is just a glorified vista service pack
What he said.
W7 runs fine as is. No need to wait any longer....

64 bit IS the way to go as long as your PC supports 64 bit.

Ok I should state I am not gonna do a "scorched earth" upgrade. I have an HP laptop which came with a ton of the usual utillities... so I am gonna do the "hot" upgrade. Rebuilding the PC from scratch is just wayyyyy to huge an undertaking...
