Was on Dundas St car yesterday and passed by ??? Poutinerie... missed name of it. (almost right across from Filmores) Did not even know such a place existed it Toronto. Mentioned it to a friend of mine and he tells me there are a few such places in GTA now.

Just wondering if anyone has tried any of them and are they any good. What are prices like etc. My friend says there is one on Queen West somewhere?

I love poutine for sure... when lived in Ottawa use to eat all the time. Have not had any in GTA with exception of that truck outside of City Hall a couple times.

So what's the verdict ... recommended or no?

Thanks ahead.

Smokes also has a spot on Adelaide, right above Burrito Boys. I'm not a big fan of either poutine. After eating it in Montreal, I think I was spoiled. To be honest, I find Harvey's potuine to be pretty damn good

I've been to Smoke's Poutinerie on Adelaide, and I was not impressed. The fries in my poutine were stale. When you charge $9 for a poutine, I would expect fresh fries to be made for each order.

My favorite poutine in Toronto is from the blue truck at Nathan Phillips Square, $4.50 for the medium size.

Only problem with Harvey's is the curds are processed and stored for (weeks?) too long. They have to be fresh and squeek when you bite into them. Plus poutine is NOT served with beef GRAVY. There is a special poutine sauce and the original is only from quebec....once you have the real thing, immitations just don't live up!

I will have to try the one across from Filmore's. Didn't even know it was there!

Can't wait actually lol......

I went to Smoke's Poutinerie in the afternoon one day and had the chicken, bacon, mushroom, carmelized onion poutine and I felt sick for the rest of the day. And I love my junk food. This is probably only best to have after a night of drinking to soak up the alcohol. Not recommended during the day.

OkieDokie...

Sounds to me like I'll be heading back to the truck outside City Hall. <LOL>

Now that I think about it I have tried Harvey's... not bad. Burger King I dumped out after few bites. SwissChalet sounds like to do list.

Yes... I two long for days use to just jog (w/pedal to the metal)... over to Que. side get me some of the good stuff.

And it didn't hurt that of course the 'best places' were right close to Pigal and Taboo. :D

Harvey's & Swiss chalet are operated by the company , Cara foods , you'll see alot of Harvey's/Swiss chalet combined in one restaurant just like Wendy's/Tim Hortons . Cara Foods also operates Montana's , The Keg & Milestone's , they've opened all five in the same parking lot near my home.

I worked at Harvey's/Swiss chalet when i was 16 , once in a while someone would order a poutine with chalet sauce instead of gravy , tried it myself , it's awesome.

Harvey's does have the best poutine out of the franchise fast food places.

I have yet to try any of the two poutine places listed by Kyra, but one of my new pet peeve is the recent trend in many higher end restaurants to serve a culinary reinterpretation of a poutine.

A poutine should be made of three main ingredients: fries (the more greasy and somewhat mushy the better, not the crispy golden variety), cheese (I can accept some good aged cheddar bits in place of the squeaky curds, but none of that gratted shit or worse, blue cheese, ew), and some flavorful gravy (in the spirit of re-interpretation, I can accept some kind of jus instead of the gravy, but there needs to be some sauce in there, made with real bones and meat, not powder). I don't care if you add duck confit and creme fraiche to it, if those three ingredients are not there (or badly executed), it ain't a poutine, re-interpretated or not.

Genintoronto even makes poutine sound exquisite and sophisticated.
You have a magical way with words.
That usually means there's a very talented tongue not too far away.

Tee OH!
Putin @ My Place?

Smoke's Poutinerie had a good poutine; however, the gravy lacked flavour and was somewhat thin/watery. Perhaps ymmv or an off night :p

Although this is a culinary reinterpretation of a poutine, they have all the ingredients which meet your requirements.

Nice place near Bloor West Village (Used to be called "The Fan").
My Place Menu ~ Poutine Hand Cut Fries with Fresh Curd and Roasted Chicken Pan Drippings

Outside of Quebec, this is the best Poutine I've ever had.

The fries were made in a very homestyle kinda way, thick enough that they're soft and mushy inside, yet crispy brown on the outside.
Curds were delicious (squeaky, great description Kyra!)...but the gravy/jus OMG...the flavour!

Costco's poutine and smoked meat.

Believe it or not Costco has a fantastic poutine. Don't have to be a member to enjoy its kitchen. Plus, some locations have Dunn's smoked meat. The price is right too. Both can be had for about $10.

I think there is one by Filmore's. There was a big lineup when I tried to go there a few months back. Ended up going to George's for fish 'n chips.
