I recently made the switch to an iMAC. I've been using an iPad for awhile and loved it so when my Dell started acting up, it made sense to me to switch over. All the reviews noted that MACs were great. Unfortunately, I'm kicking my ass for doing it. It's just been a headache and it doesn't work well. The graphics are great but that's about it. Here's some problems I've had:

1) Safari doesn't allow me to enter my banking website (or maybe the website restricts Safari - whichever??)
2) Online purchases can't be done on all websites so I have to switch back to my Dell to use Explorer
3) Access to change settings can be very restrictive

Stay with your PC if you are thinking of changing!

It's clear the computer doesn't like you. I suggest you take some training as none of the above listed problems have been experienced with mine. Find someone who has one or go back to the store you bought it from and ask them. You do need to tweak your settings.

Some of the webheads here will give you more technical solutions here.

MAC is easy to use but hard to customize.

As stated above, your problems are fixable but you need to understand how the OS works to get the most from it.

On the other hand, if you know NOTHING about computers (I'm not suggesting that's you) MACs are easier to use at a basic level out of the box.

the hobby needs more capitalism
I have no issues on my Mac doing the things you are trying to do.

Apple has a service called One on One which should make the transition easier from Windows to OS X. Call the Apple Store.

Photoboy,

I've also had no problems with any of that stuff. Is it something to do with your cookie settings perhaps?

Mac is all about the hype. it's the "in" thing for the moment. Safari is quite possibly the crappiest browser out there. Chrome, Opera, Firefox and IE are all superior
I'm on an imac right now, but using Ubuntu Linux with Chrome browser. IMHO a better experience than Mac OS and Safari.

The Mac has been around for 25+ years and simply 'just works'
It's only become the 'in' thing for Windows users who finally opened their eyes to try something different (and IMHO, something much better)
Yes, Safari is crap (still better than IE), so use Chrome, or Firefox.

No OS is perfect...Windows 8 looks promising and Android is gaining traction. But thankfully there's innovators like Apple. Otherwise we'd still be using Windows 3.x.

If somebody feels that way about Safari, then hey switch to Chrome et al, no big deal, but that doesn't mean throw out the Mac because Safari doesn't cut it for you.

GET RID OF SAFARI. I've just switched to Chrome. Safari is incredibly buggy - it crashes my computer constantly..
4trees, I've experienced bugginess with Safari also but it has never crashed my entire system. When it hangs up, I terminate just Safari and everything else I was running at the time was fine including of course OSX. Is that a more accurate description of your problems with Safari?

wigglee - I understand your last two points but imo this has nothing to do with an "Apple myth" good or bad. I'm running three different models of MAC and never had any of the problems the photoboy has been experiencing. I think that somehow the configuration changed between the time it was taken out of the box and he accessed the sites mentioned.

Your biggest problem is that you haven't been using your resources properly, Photoboy.

If you recently bought your iMac, you have Apple Care. Call 1 800 263 3394 and get an expert to guide you through whatever steps you need to configure your machine.

Call for free. Call every day if you need. Call 10 times a day if you want.

Just be sure that before year one is up, you buy the extended plan for two more years. It's worth it.

I am not in any way affiliated with Apple, etc, etc ... but I have been an Apple user for over 20 years. I like having a great IT department at my fingertips.

And I haven't experienced the problems you cite above.

Good luck ... make the phone call.

Actually yes, that is a fair statement. It has crashed my system twice though because I can't make it to the Apple up top to "Force Quit" Safari, and the dock is not responsive. But when I can "Force Quit', it does work.

I can say, however, that I have not been too pleased with this Mac. Maybe changing to Chrome will be better for me. I had a huge problem with Word on Friday. I was editing a document where I was putting in lots of comments and track changes, and the comments started appearing with weird characters, and then Word crashed. However, Apple/Word has a great crash recovery system. I nary lost a single word when I restarted and it came-up automatically.
Have you tried command_option_esc to teminate Safari rather than going to the Apple menu? I'm still using Safari and Firefox. I've heard good things about Chrome but I'm a bit leery because it's a Google product.

I don't use Office much but that's been more problematic than Safari for me.

First off, can you tell us what versions of OS X and Safari you have?

Which banking site are we talking about?
Which online site are we talking about? I've yet to encounter one site with Safari that I cannot purchase off of.
What settings are we talking about?

Or better yet, go back to where the OP bought it and ask them what is going on. No need to pay for that service.

Safari is the worst browser I now use and I have six browsers loaded on my machine. I have had it crash on my machine but that's because a site that I was on. It is VERY rare though to encounter something like that. You should try Clear History's suggestion of Command-Option-Escape in order to try to force quit Safari or any program that is not responding for that matter.

That reminds me, with Safari, on some sites, it will go "non-responsive" for a while but then it will come back to life. I now give it a few mins in such cases to work through what the site is doing.

The Word issue is a Microsoft issue, not an Apple one. Make sure that you have the latest updates for it.

Apple may be innovate quite a lot (and well) on the superficial level (exteriors), but as for their OS? Unix based, with a few Linux like features as well - "spaces" being one of them http://www.hackitlinux.com/50226711/features_in_apples_leopard_that_are_in_linux.php
There's even a SpyBook page about them http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=2226740859&topic=3116&post=10188
http://www.tecrux.com/2011/06/07/5-features-ios-5-copied-from-android/

LG (a company I personally don't like at all) came out with a touch screen based phone before Apple.

Apple even considered Linux, but went with BSD because of the licensing terms with Linux (open source), BSD licensing didn't require it.

In summation, Apple has a nice exterior shell with a Unix based system (inside).
Nothing overly innovative about them if you really look at it more closely.
You should be thanking Unix really for the OS, and Jobs & Co. for the shiny slick outsides.

I bought a Mac laptop in 2007. The G4 15 inch. It took me a year to get used to it. I thought of getting rid of it many times but it is just so beautiful that I could not part with it. My main desktop is a PC to this day and certain things work better for me on the PC.
Just hang in there. Take a few lessons and it will be fine. They are great machines. Last longer and look better than many SPs. :))
