Are escorts "Recession proof"?

It looks like business is skyrocketing for some agencies. Some even upped their price.

Among some of the industries that do better in recessions are:

Liquor Stores
Candy, coffee, cigaret and Chocolate sales go up
etc.

The theory is during these times of stress people need their indulgences despite being broke.

Does this apply to escorts?

The last two recessions would suggest that the sextrade is far from recession proof.

It's hard to justify dropping a couple bills when finances are tight. Stay home and rub one out. Also, supply tends to go up keeping prices down.

If the economy doesn't improve, prices will drop.

Sex is recession proof. Sex costing $250+ is not recession proof.

Economy has been pretty stale or even dropping for at least 2 years now. Prices ahve not dropped and in fact have risen. Could it be artificially pumped up by a cabal of pimps?

I am not sure that they are recession proof, but they certainly are victims of inflation.

New guys always ask the same questions. This is my favourite, where they try to apply classic economic theory to a system that does not follow classic economic rules.

I agree wholeheartedly. Sex is always in demand - even more so when people have more time on their hands thanks to layoffs, reduction in hours etc. Dollars available to pay for sex decrease at a disproportionately higher rate as personal income drops towards zero and future employment prospects hover around nil.

Apparently the economy is Canada is supposed to be doing well over the past 2 years. House prices still haven't dropped either.

Harking back to Economics 100 it all depends upon whether the demand for escorts is elastic or inelastic, I would argue that it is elastic unless you are totally addicted to escorting and then you probably have greater problems than merely money.

Another factor to consider is that the Canadian economy is currently in better shape than the U.S. economy.

The escort business does follow the rules of economies.

Agency prices have remained fairly steady over the past 5 years or so, haven't they? I think there are more PSE offerings than ever before. If my memory serves me right, this means that hobbiests get more bang for their buck. Just one of many factors to think about. But if the Toronto housing market crashes, people start declaring bankruptsy in record numbers, and layoffs go through the roof, I think we would see a prices in the GTA drop (could come in a variety of forms including more *specials* if not outright reversal to lower prices across the board).

Understand that escorts can weather difficult economies and keep the same price for a long time because they already make so much more than the cost of living in the city. An SP that's making $20k a month that has her income cut by 50% or more in a bad economy will still be able to live comfortably without changing her rate. Agencies gross hundreds of thousands of dollars per month. The biggest ones could be clearing 7 figures. When they're hurting, it's not the same kind of hurt that the typical Torontonian feels when her income drops.
