My brother-in-law is going out on a salmon fishing charter and has offered some salmon if he catches enough. There was a time when you couldn't have paid me to eat something from Lake Ontario. It is my belief that the lake has been cleaner for a few years now.

Are Lake Ontario salmon safe to eat?

YOu should read up on the Ministry website. Just offhand I remember there being limits as to size that are safe to eat. I seem to recall up to 10 lbs but like I said, check out what the ministry says.

I tell ya, the little ones smoked are awesome!!!

I am sure the ministry has guidelines for eating the salmon, but I don't know what they are. Probably something like not for pregnant women, not over a certain size, and only so many times per month. So essentially, they are saying - come chow down on these fish that have toxic chemicals in them. As long as you don't eat too much, you'll be okay. Myself, I wouldn't take the ministry's word for it.

That's why I am asking here. I want a truthful answer, not a politically correct one.

Well, ok, so let me get this straight. You want someone's opinion who has no direct scientific knowledge instead of an agency whose sole job is to produce these guidelines and if they are incorrect, face severe risk via lawsuits?

OH kay......

For the record Lakes Ontario and Erie are supposedly the cleanest they've been for decades. I can see that since dumping of ANY toxic chemicals has been banned. I know accidents do happen but it is not as widespread as it once was.....

BTW: if you happen to hook one of the big brown ones, throw it back, that's not a fish......well maybe it WAS a fish before it passed through someone's body *eg*

I can attest to the fact that the 10 lbs and under ones are delicious...smoked, pan fried, sauteed, YUM The bigger ones are a little tough.

That goes a long way to explain the piercings in and around the face.

Yep safe to eat. Just make sure when cleaning them to cut at least one to two inches of the belly off. This is where the majority of the contamints end up in all game fish. Enjoy. GB

The Ministry of Natural resoruces issues a fairly large booklet every year that details species, location caught, size, etc. and the amount that is safe to eat. Without checking, it is probably available online at their web site. You used to be able to get it at the beer store and hunting/fishing stores.

The contaimates are in the fat around the belly of the fish. Salmon are a fast growing fish as compared to lake trout so it is better to eat a smaller salmon then it is to eat a larger lake trout, Actually I would not eat any lake trout out of lake ontario that was over 4lb. Any do not eat a lot of the meat, a few meals once a month is fine. People worry about fish out of lake ontario because of what we know is in the water, why not worry about fish caught in waters we don't know anything about?

LOL Yes, by all means, the government can do no wrong. Unless of course they are unionized. ;)

Look at it this way g_27, eat it and you'll never know if the toxic chemicals have an effect on you. So maybe you'll get cancer (statistically you have a fairly good chance of getting it) 20 or 30 years from now. Did you get it because you ate a fish 30 years ago? Not likely.
Did you get it because you repeated made decisions in your life that exposed you to toxic chemicals? Perhaps partly. Let's face it, there are toxic chemicals all over the place, even in Inuit mother's breast milk. Its a judgement call how you want to live your life, but for sure you can to some degree control how many chemicals you are exposed to over your life time. And these chemicals are largely responsible for the skyrocketing cancer rates. But please keep in mind that the government is under a lot of industry pressure (tourism, fisheries) to manipulate regulations that so that people can eat fish "safely." And they will never get sued for it because it is impossible to prove.

I think there are many different truths, aka opinions. You will have to educate yourself about environmental toxins and decide for yourself what or who to believe.

Let me put it this way, if you like to eat fish that glow in the dark with 3-eyes then be my guess. Lake Ontario is akin to a Detroit sewer.

Don't laugh.
A buddy caught one of them 3 eyed ones a few years back there!.....

As long as they have 2 eyes and don't glow in the dark.... you might be OK.
Do you feel lucky?...Do ya?....
