last night on my way to the local bar i stopped at my RBC bank machine and made a withdrawl. after counting my cash i saw that one $20 bill was missing part of the bill. it is missing 2 numbers of the serial #on the right side. am I out of luck or is there something i can do. thanks for the help

I guess you win some, you lose some. About a year ago I made an ATM withdrawl of $100.00 and there was a $10.00 inside the twenties, giving me a total of $90.00. I called the customer service phone # on the ATM, (it was not one of the major banks machines), where they told me they would investigate the claim. About 2 weeks later they got back to me and told me the machines funds balanced and I was out of luck. Not much money i know, but I have probably paid hundreds in service charges using that ATM. Since then, I have only used ATM's from my own financial institution. It is my own way of sticking it to the man. 
I would not be surprised if in the future, the US/Canada start placing RFID tags in currency for purposes of tracking, counterfeit detection, money laundering investigations, and to help banks find the lucky winners of impromptu ATM lotteries. I doubt that they will assume that everyone is honest.

I would have still argued my case. Of course the machine would balance, the 10 was counted as a 20 and was given to you as a 20. Only problem was it wasn't a 20...the mistake was made somewhere down the line where they get their cash from.....
Just imagine how much profit they would realize if they did that for every 10 transactions!

I see your point, but my time is more valuable than the money I lost. I find it easier just to not let them make any more money off me. Cheers.
They have similar third party machines that charge a buck fifty in convenience stores - and thats on top of Interacs 2 bucks. I remember reading about a machine at CasinoRama that dispensed 50s that counted as 20s all day. It seems that the former staffer who loaded the chambers got confused. And of course all accounts that logged withdrawls after the machine was loaded incorrectly were debited appropriately. Apparently some people went back for multiple withdrawls once word got around. Greed is good.

Last week I deposited $200 but,distracted somewhat, keyed in only $100. Have contacted my bank and was told the entry should be corrected by Tuesday.
As far as ATM service fees go, I have encountered them as high as $10. It was in a darkened peeler place and, thank god, I hadn't sampled any of the merchandise so I didn't get hooked -- that time anyways!

The In-Branch ATM's are owned by the banks but they may be serviced by 3rd parties to remove and load cash as the banks don't have their own armoured car services.
The White labeled machines are owned by others, hell you could put one in yourself and charge whatever the market would bear.

I work for a white label ATM company (private bank machines like in a convenience store or strip club).
The ATM's marked with a bank name (Royal Band, CIBC, BOM, etc) are owned and controlled by that bank. They would hire a company like Loomis or Securcor to load and do simple maintenance.
The $50 bill and $10 bills that were received out of the machines were probably accidentally put in the pile of cash that was loaded in and as someone else said, of course it would balance, it was counted as a $20.
The highest fee I know of is a %10 fee at a strip club. So a $400 withdraw would cost you $440! Damn.... Always check the ATM fee BEFORE you hit the VIP room. As Winter Hawk said "hell you could put one in yourself and charge whatever the market would bear.". If you think about it, it just takes one guy to do one withdraw at a $40 surcharge and you make up for 25 other people walking away if the club was only charging $1.50!

I withdraw some cash with another card and deposit the same money into a another account. When I check my account $20 bucks is debited as "counterfeit" money. I mentioned my bank manager casually, but let it go as it is only $20. I wonder what would happen it was larger amount?

A few years ago I went to withdraw cash from the RBC at #7 & 404. Whirred and clicked, but dispensed nothing. Went into the bank the next day and explained. "Oh No, that couldn't have happened". "Well it did".
They had to count what was in the machine against receipts. Was credited shortly after with the money.
Moral. Banks never believe you and they can apparently do no wrong.
