Chicago just signed Artemis Panarin to a 2-year extension. He's in the final year of his entry-level deal.

This kid is the real deal too and is a great fit with their current roster of stars. It's not surprising that the Hawks gave him an extension.

Wait till he becomes a RFA in a couple of yrs. I could see the Coyotes signing him to an offer sheet at around $12-14 million a year which will force the Leafs to match.

If the Coyotes want to surrender 4 first round picks to Leafs. Frankly I'd keep the 4 first rounders.

It's rare for average players, even rarer for young superstar players, even rarer for a small market team trying to screw a big market team;

But being the Leafs hater you are, keep trying to dream up bad things that could happen to the Leafs to amuse yourself.

Arizona can't even afford to bring their payroll to the cap floor. Never could they afford to pay Matthews to long term deal at around $12-$15 mil.

Not if he's got a smart agent. No better way than maximizing your clients worth than getting him involved in a bidding war.

Leafs have the right to make the offer first. Arizona cannot do any tampering. Signing RFA's has always been a risky move, having to forfeit draft picks and teams rarely do it.

That would end the rebuild that has already started, not a good idea, especially since Matthews looks like he will be a stud.

With what Matthews has shown thus far and being a hometown icon, he's worth more than a "franchise player" to Arizona. He'd be a "franchise saving player" to them with all their financial woes. Getting Matthews would probably fill their arena at least for the rest of the season and next few so I don't think they'd say no to any demand for players or drafts if the Leafs should ask.

Unfortunately for them, McDavid will probably be the only player in the world that the Leafs would consider trading Matthews one for one.
