I wouldn't recommend any program to shut down the O/S that did not come from Micro$oft. Also, Win 7 is pre-programmed to defrag the hard drive every Wednesday night and that's also the best time to be doing virus scans and downloading updates.

Thanks for the info - i did try using MS Scheduler with the shutdown.exe found in Win32 directory - but it showed as having suceeded in history but did nothing towards shutting down system. If I could get something that worked I would not run it on Wed nights. Any suggestion as to how to get windows scheduler to work?

You can make a task to do this in the Task Scheduler.
Just create a task to run at the time you want, recur every 1 days.
Select Start a Program and put "shutdown /s /t 10" as the command.
or "shutdown /s /f"

/s = shutdown
/f = force apps to close
/t 10 = wait 10 seconds and also includes /f

Without /f it will just ask you stupid Windows questions and wait for answers.
