Autodialers

If this has been asked before, my apologies in advance. I did a search on terb, but couldn't find any relevant threads.

The other day an autodialer showed up on my computer. I immediately disconnected and tried to get rid of it. Went into dial-up, but everytime I tried to delete it, it simply replicated itself. Did a search for any files using that name and came up with nothing.
Checked the control panel and the c drive for any unusual programs, again zilch. So I decided to run Norton, which is updated though somehow let this slip through anyway, also Cyberscrub, Ad-Aware, and Spy-Bot. After cleaning everything up, the little bugger was still there. I have no idea where it was hiding. Out of frustration I ran a non-destructive recovery, which finally worked, but was a total pain in the butt.

Is there something else I could have done to remove it, and what's the best way to avoid it happening again? The tech folks at Norton were no help at all. Thanks.

Whatever you do do NOT pay the bill if BELL tries to stick you with it. You can take it to court and you will win!!!
Most of the time it doesnt go that far and BELL usually gives in if you give it a good fight

restore on XP seems to do it.

I have found that by disconnecting the dialup line and switching to cable seems to help in eleviating this.

Thanks for the link, but if you look, what they recommend to detect and get rid of these programs is....Ad-Aware and Spy-Bot. Been there tried that. Contacted my phone company and it doesn't sound like it will be a problem. Also I caught it almost immediately. What was interesting is that none of the various programs I have could even locate it. The only place it showed up was in dial-up, where it mutated itself under a slighlty different name every few seconds, with a seemingly endless supply of different dialling numbers.

Did you turn off system restore when you ran Ad-aware and Spy Bot?

Start-Control Panel- System-SystemRestore is where you can find it.

Turn this off, run the programs again and see if it makes a difference.

Yup. Tried that too. Also ran disk clean-up, defragmentation, and check disk for errors. In the end I just found it easier to start over. Trust me, this was one insidious little bugger.

Escohort,
Dial-up.

use firewall.
sigh,

I have the most updated firewall that Symantec offers, and it still got through. I think most people would be surprised by all the crap on their computers they don't know about, and don't realize how easily it can get there.
