I thought I'd just post a testimonial for the Automobile Protection Association (APA) for the benefit of other TERBites.
The APA is sort of like the CAA but is much, much more. A membership is something like $65 a year, but you get a list of recommending and accredited garages and dealerships, 5 auto quotes that tell you exactly what the dealer's costs are (plus the option to buy almost at cost with no haggling required), Lemon Aid guides, summaries of vehicle recalls and class action suits, extensive vehicle reviews, group home/auto insurance, access to APA counselors when you're buying a new car, and on and on and on.
I've been a member for a couple years and have been totally satisfied. The APA will answer all those car questions you've always had but been unable to get a straight answer for. If you're going to buy a car (new or used), you're nuts not to invest $65 as you'll save hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars with their assistance.
Check it out at www.apa.ca. You won't be disappointed.
