Bandwidth issues with ISP! Anyone else?

I had my service interrupted because of excessive bandwidth use and obviously because of the fact I've done a lot of uploading using UTorent.

I know in the past it's never been an issue with uploading anything and the network security department with cogeco cable sent me a few emails saying they'd be suspending me with excessive bandwith use.

Is there a way to avoid this and not have the isp provider monitor my computer so I can download as much as I want? I've heard there's a program for this or if anyone else has a tech secret to avoid it, please let me know.

Thanks.

Don't upload so much... then you can download more

or change plans... I think my plan allows me 160GB of data per month... and a small fee per GB above that.

I download many torrents.. but I do not upload anything (torrents)

I never thought there was an over use during upload, but there is. I think your refering to sharing because as for torrents I only download. Could it be someone hacked into my computer and the reason for the excessive bandwidth?

As far as UTorrent, I think I found the solution and that is, DHT will run anytime µTorrent is running and using both download AND upload bandwidth.

What kind of numbers are we talking about? ISPs are generally pretty flexible. It sounds like you were really taking advantage.

Data usage is for both uploading and downloading. I don't know how it's possible to download torrents without uploading in return as most sites track your upload/download ration and will cut you off if you're not sharing in return.

I try to keep my ratio a little over 1.0. You do need to keep an eye on it b/c it's often faster to upload than it is to download.

Do they throttle your account? My Rogers account is throttled.

Your account is not throttled, the issue is Roger's is performing traffic shaping of torrents, this is your problem. They have priortized web, and their voice traffic so that everything else is slow. You are not the only one that experiences this problem everyone does. Sympatico does perform the same thing also, so the only recourse here is to find another ISP that does not do traffic shaping. With shared mediums like cable you best keep your upload speed to a minimum as to not to affect your download rates or get you snubbed by other torrent peers. The other thing is to make sure to encrypt the traffic within utorrent and there is an option for it so that the ISP cannot look inside the IP packet payload and shape your trafffic.

You can try this if it helps any.

How to increase download speeds of uTorrent.

Good Luck

Who says you can't run a small business from your home? That's dumb.

I'd understand that they send you an email for downloading pirated stuffs but for excessive bandwidth use it's simply obscene. It is like fining a car owner for driving his car too much!

If you encrypt the outgoing data and change the ports your software uses then it should go much better. Now if they see that you are using too much upload bandwidth they will try to block it. Bell is a bunch of assholes as they will disconnect you regularly if they see it happening.
It's really frustrating, dishonest methods, and it just calls for a class action.

What he probably means is that you're supposed to have a business account if you're running a business from home. Not use your personal account for business purposes (particularly if there's large volumes of traffic involved).

Teksavvy has 100 GB/mo b/w limits before additional fees apply, but I think they only count download b/w. I use 90% plus of my bandwidth for uploading, and one time I thought I was close to my monthly limit. I asked tech support how much I had used, and they told me 8 GB!

They also take average bandwidth usage over several month into account when determining if you are using too much, (ie: if you use 60 GB/mo regularly, you could use 150 GB in another month with no problem.

Anyone who is using teksavvy as a result of information on this board owes one to the Cobster.
