The Mets tied up their series with the Cards tonight, so it is 2-2. Even though I am a Mets fan, I will be pessimistic and say it doesn't look good. The Mets have one reliable starter, the ancient Tom Glavine. Maine sucks. Trachsel sucks. Perez won tonight, but only because the Mets scored 12 runs. They were talking about the Mets starting Darren Oliver in Game 7 if they had to. Darren Oliver!

Even if the Mets get by the Cardinals, which is not going to be easy, their pitching just doesn't match up well against the Tigers. You could say Glavine and Rogers cancel each other out, but the Mets have no one to counter Verlander or Bonderman.

Cover your ears ...

MEET THE METS,
MEET THE METS,
Step right up and greet the Mets!
Bring your kiddies,
bring your wife;
Guaranteed to have the time of your life
because the Mets are really sockin’ the ball; knocking those home runs over the wall!
East side,
West side,
everybody’d coming down
to meet the M-E-T-S Mets of New York town!

Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people on the streets,
where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
Oh, they’re hollerin’ and cheerin’ and they’re jumpin’ in their seats,
where did they go? To MEET THE METS!
All the fans are tru to the orange and blue,
so hurry up and come on down -
‘cause we’ve got ourselves a ball club,
The Mets of New York town!
Give ‘em a yell!
Give ‘em a hand!
And let ‘em know your rootin’ in the stand!

Ugh. The Mets really needed that game last night. Glavine just couldn't pull off another big game.

Back in July/August, the Mets didn't try to pick up another reliable starter (not that there was a lot to choose from), but many pundits were saying that with Martinez, Glavine, Hernandez and Trachsel, the Mets' starting staff, while not overwhelming, was certainly not disadvantaged vs. anyone else in the NL.

So much for that notion.

......as long as they're all available as opposed to only 50%.

Carpenter vs. Maine. While Carpenter had a much better record, 15-8 vs. 10-10, the era's were closer 3.09 vs. 3.44. I think the Mets have a decent chance of pulling it off tonight.

Mets in New York before their own fans? I think they win tonight and win the series. You gotta believe!

I believe, I believe. Just can't bear to watch, that's all. Oh, wouldn't David Wells or Greg Maddux look awfully good right now.

But shack, you may be right. I watched Maine pitched a few times during the season and the kid has good stuff. He just needs to throw strikes early in the count. Which is a little like saying the Titanic would have been fine except for that iceberg, but you know what I mean.

Being in NY is a definite plus. I figure if the Mets can pull this one out tonight, everyone on the Mets pitching staff is available for Game 7. I would even consider pitching Glavine again for a couple of innings.

The last time I felt this level of pessimism was before game 6 of the '86 WS. That worked out okay.

Let's go Mets!

The Tigers are all on cloud nine right now, and they feel like they can do anything at this point. This is the path all winning teams take, as they are simply on fire right now. What's best is that nobody was feeling these guys out of the spring.

It's hard for me as HUGE baseball fan, not to really like this team right now. :)

does anyone else find Yadier Molina somewhat creepy?
Ya the Mets do,, Hell of a game tonight . The Birds might have limped into the playoffs but now they get a shot at the Tigers 38 years later for all the marbles again. If this next series is anything like the 68 series. baseball fans are in for a treat. Go CARDS.:D

Yes, I agree that the Tigers are on a role but it will be more then a week between last game and first game of World Series and that may kill the mometum .. The team that wins game seven will have the high the Tigers had.
Well, I think rest in between series in baseball is something positive. In hockey, a long layoff in between series can work against you.

Anyway, my money is on the Tigers. Good pitching will always beat good hitting. The Cardinals have Carpenter and that's it. The Tigers have good starting pitching and a good bullpen. They also have an above average offence to boot.

I like the idea of the Tigers or Cards taking it all. :)

Pretty good game 7 tonight. You gotta love October ball, with October drama!

Well, the nice thing about being a pessimist is that you're never disappointed, only pleasantly surprised. Despite all my hand wringing over the Mets starters, it wasn't the starters that did them in. Maine pitched well last night and so did Perez tonight. No, it was the vaunted Mets bullpen and offense that let them down. Wagner comes in and loses Game 2, Heilman loses Game 7. And 4 hits is not going to get it done against anyone.

I'd like to see the Tigers take it in 5.

Wagner looked hittable the whole time. I'm not sure why. Last time I saw him he was anything but hittable.

I'll tell you why. He's a bum. An overrated, overpriced bum.

Okay, okay, still better than Looper or Benitez. But still a bum.

I remember seeing him make angry fools out of good hitters while with the 'stros when he would mix that slider in. HE THREW THAT HARD AT ONE TIME. I recall bats beeing tossed into the crowd, and batters drilling themselves into the ground as they were so off balance when he changed speeds.

Now he throws escalated BP, and plate corner BP so guys can hit the other way with ease. He is not even close to the Billy Wagner that baseball weekly used to praise. I think he lost some zip on his hummer.

The Mets had to settle for Wagner as the second prize in the free agent closer sweepstakes when the Jays signed Ryan.

Too bad I probably won't see a lot of the WS. I'm headed for some golf in Scottsdale and probably won't be parking my butt in front of a TV for any extended periods of time. I'll be back in time for Game 6, if there is one. Even though I've always liked the Cards organization I'm pulling for the Cinderella Tigers this year. They certainly look like the better team right now.
