I would like to have some dress shirts made for me by a tailor. I would appreciate any recommendations about tailors in Toronto, preferably downtown or on the subway lines. A business that does the measuring here and makes the shirts offshore would be fine as well.

Thanks in advance.

You would be well advised to be properly measured here and have your shirts made by;

www.ascotchang.com

There is also;

http://www.maxwellsclothiers.com/

who actually come to toronto 2-3 times a year and do the measuring then send your shirts shortly thereafter. They are "fine" but are more every day shirts, not exceptional ones.

I have a large collection(+/-40) shirts from;

http://www.thomaspink.com

which is still my sentimental favourite as it was the first custom shirt I ever purchased from the original store on Jermyn Street before they went international and opened stores all over. They do have great shirts and great material and patterns. They just aren't as rare as they once were which diminishes their value slightly to me.

Enjoy!

Oh, and if you wear a watch, especially a chunky one, make sure to have the cuff made bigger on that sleave to accomodate it, it's a nice touch and adds to the fit and comfort.

Thanks Masseuse. I appreciate the advice. As it happens Maxwell is in town over the next couple days. I will pay them a visit.

I agree Sukdeep. I was thinking if he was looking for tailored "work" shirts that Maxwell's would be fine. If he wants to spend $2-500 and have something special, then my other suggestions will "fit the bill".

Brioni makes made to measure shirts - In Toronto Harry Rosen upstairs on Bloor will fit you, shirts are made in Italy, sent to the store, and you come in to pick them up. Best with an Italian cut suit.

In London, Turnbull & Asser make great full custom shirts. Best worn with an English cut suit. I went in to be fitted there in the 80's and they said I was a perfect fit for their standard cut model, which saved me money.

In Paris, Charvet makes nice shirts. I've never been there, but have heard good things.

The Big Smoke
What about The Royal Shirt company in 40 Adesso Dr, Thornhill, ON, L4K2Y6,
(905) 738-4676. This place is very sentimental to me. Knowing that I could not afford the shirts after starting my first job fresh out of university, the owner's wife was very kind to me and put me on their list. I still have one or two of their shirts.
