best anti-virus software

B

burt-oh-my!

Ideas wanted on best anti-virus software which not only detects but also removes viruses. I want something i can download. For use in somewhat older machines, so hopefully not too huge a program. Also, if it were shareable with all the computers in my house that would be nice.

Also been using Avast since 2006 with NO problems.

On my new PC I also run Microsoft's free anti virus www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials and it seems to do the job for the little W7 is used.

Linux is my main OS which has none of the security issues plaguing Windows.
Plus Linux is all FREE....

In the past I have used Avast and Kaspersky and been happy with the results.
For many months I have been using (FREE) Microsoft Security Essentials and it has worked very well and does not f/up or hog resources.

I would never (again) use Norton, Mcafee (personal opinion - they suck)

Hackers design their attacks around the more popular AV programs thus improving their chances of success.

About 6 yrs ago I was running Norton Pro and my system began to operate slow so I knew something was wrong . . . long story short a friend suggested I remove Norton and try Kaspersky. The Kaspersky AV found 61 issues completely missed by Norton and my entire system ran smooth after Kaspersky worked its magic.

I've been using Bit Defender on my laptop, and AVG on my desk top.... both have been excellent... never caught a virus, not intrusive, not resourse hogs.

so you get infected all the time and just don't know about it?
Nope!
Mac and Linux have far better security and don't/can't get infected like M$....

i have used AVG and have been happy.
Don't be so confident with AVG, I used it for over a year and thought it was great too.

Little did I know there was a server running in the background that Rogers found out about and threatened to shut down my connection. After dealing with tech support the first thing they said was remove AVG and install their Rogers AV (Norton clone), sure enough there it was and got removed.

I don't like Norton either so I went with AVAST and periodically check with IObit Security 360, Returnil, Spyware Doctor & Microtrend Housecall. Yes, i'm paranoid now.

Following Woodpeckr's wisdom, i've dual booted on the laptop to W7 & Linux. Maybe I too will be M$ free some day.

Good Move! This is the way to do it.

I'm no geek but 4 yrs ago did the same, only I was dual booting with XP & Linux. This way you have 2 OS to use, while learning Linux at your own pace. If you get in trouble or are confused you always have Windows to use. The Ubuntu Forums are excellent for help on any questions I had.....just like this Tech Forum. Now 4 yrs later I'm M$ FREE and can do EVERYTHING needed with Linux. Best of all Linux and all its software didn't cost a penny!....

I'm rather techy so shouldn't be a problem for me, the SO likes XP and hates change so she's not even ready for W7 yet, LOL. The desktop is still plugging away with XP, Oh well someday I may get to use the second core and expanded memory on the desktop.

I'm using ArtistX (Ubuntu based) on the laptop and first impression is it has tonnes of graphic/video stuff plus everything else you could want. Getting the networking setup is a pain in the butt compared with XP or W7 though. Everything else works well so far.

ArtistX looks interesting and must be a newer distro.
ArtistX is not even listed on the top 100 list of www.Distrowatch.com which lists the most popular Linux flavors out. Most Linux distros come fully loaded now with most of the apps you will need, as you discovered.

Ditto for me. Good product at zero cost. Why pay for something else?
