A couple of guys everyone always overlooks primarily because they spend most of their time toiling in the background of studio sessions...Steve Gadd (Steely Dan) and Jeff Pocaro (unfortunately he's dead and worse, his most commercial and best know work was with Toto).

There are the classic big band guys:
Louie Bellson, Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa.

And of course currently as far as innovation and versatility are concerned Carter Beuaford picks up where Neil Peart and Stewart Copeland left off.

Unfortunately too many drummers gain noteriety due to their band's popularity and the fact that they are solid metronomes who do not detract from the music by overplaying (critical skills none the less and a category I place myself in (sans noteriety) along with Charlie Watts and Ringo Starr as examples). However, the truly great drummers enhanced the musicality of the band and the songs and were just as vital to the melodic content of the music as the piano, bass, guitar and singer.

Just the musings of someone with Traps in his blood.

Just to back it up a little bit....Ginger Baker was a fiercesome and innovative drummer for Cream (and later for his own band, Ginger Baker's Air Force), however he did not play with Derek and the Dominos.

Doctor - rock on man. You're so right about the over-noteriety. I love the Beatles and the Stones, but listen to Watts or Starr and then listen to Copeland, or Danny Carey, or Krupa. You can't imagine their music without them, where as anyone could sit in and do what Ringo Starr and Charlie Watts does. That doesn't diminish their accomplishments - Ringo had a lot more to do with the Beatles than just drums - but it is relatively easy to sit down and be a human metronome.

When I was very young I saw Buddy Rich have a drum off with Animal on the Muppet Show - soon after my parents bought me a little Animal drum set, and I've been playing ever since. (I wish I still had that damn Muppets kit). :) What kind of kit do you play on, Doctor?

Stupid poll

There has not, is not, and probably will never be any real competition for Neil Peart.

Canada does a lot of wistful navel gazing at the US, but there is no doubt we are the best musicians, actors, and sports entertainers they can pretend are americans.

that's the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard. Not the one about Neil, but the second one. Please...that's a friggin joke.
