can anyone suggest any good lap top recommendations somewhere in the 1500 to 2000 grand range
I'd recommend you put out some guidelines in what you are looking for...

Portability
Performance
- Gaming
- Video
All-purpose

portability is a big issue with me I dont want something that is heavy, it would be an all purpose, but mainly for internet, spreadsheets and word documents use and such

Highly recommended for business students due to its light weight, durability and multitasking capabilities like internet surfing, business applications like spreadsheets, word documents, etc. Recommend you get the extended warranty plan, well worth the money.

For the above usage, I'd simply get something like a Compaq for under 800 loon plus tax, and use the change on , say, hobbying.

for the 1500 - 2000 range...

I'd suggest the ASUS W3J:

Intel® Core™ Duo T2500 2.0GHz Processor
w/2,048k L2 On-die cache - 667MHz FSB

It's fast, with great components and almost a gaming machine.
It's 14 inches, so it's relatively light.

What about sony vios they any good?
Sony Vios - good but expensive
Lenovo's - best built quality and keyboard
Asus - best bang for the buck
Apple - A solid choice as well

If your looking at ultraportable 12" and not a gamer- i like the thinkpad x60 or Sager NP6260
Stay away from Dell

I have a Toshiba that has given me nothing but problems. Will never buy them again.

Wow no kidding?
Their laptops are pretty damn good on to be honest.
You may have gotten a bad one (bad batch?).
Buddy has one for a year now, runs great.
I had one back in '98, loved it, one durable mofo.
IBM's great but way over-priced, then again, it is aimed at the bu$ine$$ professional.
But I'd take Toshiba, IBM (err Lenovo-made in China now?), Dell (not too shabby).
Personally I'd steer clear from Compaq and HP (never liked their products -HP).
But someone else here begs to differ, so won't get into that argument.
