now , back to the original question posed by Train....here it is..... THE TRUTH...the greatest female singer, in pop, rock, soul or r&b is Darlene Love..
That actually wasn't the question . It was the greatest female ROCK singer. Unfortunately Woody has no concept as to what rock is and keeps coming up with pop singers or worse, country or bubble-gum.

PT you are indeed a befuddled soul here

Unfortunately Woody has no concept as to what rock is and keeps coming up with pop singers or worse, country or bubble-gum.
Which leads you to needlessly split pussy hairs here!

Best pipe Rock female ...

... from your list , Ann Wilson hands down, sheer power and more.

I dig the rest as well, especially Hynde. Most of female Rock pipes I dig are more on the " vox character " side.

Lucinda Williams is another " character " type that I've grown to enjoy the past couple years, her country rock stuff.

Woody you negleted to say what the source of the list was so we can see that it is in fact a rock list and how it was compiled. You obviously copied it so give us the link. I think they/you are confusing all the genres into rock. I would hazard a guess that no one thinks that Emmylou Harris, Karen Carpenter, Indigo Girls, Olivia Newton John and Joan Baez ( Woodstock notwithstanding) would classify themselves as rock artists. In additionabout half the artists are R&B. Granted there is a lot more crossover between R&B and rock than between folk and rock.

I also note that the list is for artists while the poll was for voices...who has the best pipes. There is a difference Nevertheless conspicuously absent from the list were many, if not most of the women that you have been touting including Marylyn McCoo and Patsy Cline.

Source was in red link.
Perhaps you missed it.
There are many 'lists' created over the years on this.
Again you like Possum Trot are splitting pussy hairs. Most artists then and now crossed over to other music genres ....

I also note that the list is for artists while the poll was for voices...who has the best pipes. There is a difference Nevertheless conspicuously absent from the list were many, if not most of the women that you have been touting including Marylyn McCoo and Patsy Cline.
I was responding to befuddled Possum Trot who had drifted off the 'pipes' theme preferring to talk on R&R 'concept'.....

Again many lists on this have been compiled.

Are you saying Marylyn McCoo and Patsy Cline had NO pipes???

It was interesting to note that the source of our lists is the same EXCEPT in the list I published the site admits they have corrected the classification errors commonly made in other list by people that know nothing about music and can't tell country from rock such as yourself.

To call Karen Carpenter a rock artist is not splitting pussy hairs it's downright comic blasphemy, something your buddy Rush would likely do.

One of the most underrated voices in rock/pop. I enjoyed her music in the 80's

I'm a pretty big Gwen Stefani fan too. As far as contemporary artists she's right up there as far as voice quality

A lot of very good female singers out there. This is one of those 'to each their own' type of deal.

I like Stevie Nicks and Annie Wilson.
Also even though she is not rock I like Martina McBride. To me WOW what a voice.

Lawsuit

In 2004, she sued Pink Floyd and EMI for songwriting royalties on the basis that her contribution to "The Great Gig in the Sky" constituted co-authorship with keyboardist Richard Wright. Originally, she was paid the standard flat fee of £30 for Sunday studio work. In 2005, an out-of-court settlement was reached in Torry's favour, although the terms of the settlement were not disclosed.[5] All releases after 2005 credit 'Richard Wright/Clare Torry' for the "Great Gig in the Sky" segment.
