Hi,

So last week I decided to look at learning more about Bittorents as I had heard it talked about here a lot but did not really know what it was all about.

All I can say is great stuff. I have been furiously downloading porn all week. Got some great stuff.

I have found two really good sites for porn, pussytorrents and puretna.

My question now is are there any good sites for 'regular' stuff. Movies, TV documentary, shows etc. With porn I have found that the torrents can download quite fast as there are lots of seeders. I guess porn aficionados are into sharing.

So far the regular sites that I have found invariably have lots of takers and few givers, thus painfully slow downloads.

Any suggestions? or is this just the nature of the beast?

Enjoy it while it lasts. Rogers is clamping down on torrent traffic and the other major ISPs are looking at curbing traffic also.

I live in Germany. I am not sure if they are doing anything about it here. I hope not.

if you guys in rogers, you should try to look at newsgroup
Rogers has a very good server for newsgroup that actually out-source Giganews
Newsleecher is one of good newsgroup software
and you you can subscribe www.newzbin.com for few bucks a month
so you can grab the link and download the stuff you like right away
the DL speed are around 50kb/s - 100kb/s
I have ever downloaded over 30G stuff from newsgroup within a month
then I got an alert email from Rogers :D

Try port 1720 with Rogers. With cable i am getting over 500 kB/s download speed. I am using Bitlord. I was getting 2kB/s before i started using port 1720.
pm me if you need any further assistance.

Can't get confirmation mail

I signed onto pussytorrents.org and was told I needed to wait for the confirmation email before I could proceed. This email never came. I live in the states and have AOL. Anyone have any thoughts about why this is happening and how I can get around it?

Go to Slyck.com for downloading news / advice ...

I use uTorrent ... it is currently the one with the least system overhead.

Many sites are cutting off BT because the latest version doesn't respect
Private Torrent sites access requirements ... so they're banning it.
My advice is to use uTorrent or Azureus.

But the *best* site on the net for the Downloading community is:
www.slyck.com

By Far. It rates the top 5 Torrent sites and gives you all the latest news
involving file exchange and downloading. As well, at the bottom of the Home page, it lists all the newest open source releases as soon as they come out.
And it allows users to give feedback on the various software, etc. in use.

There is no other site like it on the internet. :)
Don't take my word on it ... go visit it. I'm happier than a pig in sh*t.
Cheers,
Conquistador

Thanks for the tip. Am using puretna and can get a file downloaded but it is like 20kb and won't play on any of a variety of players I have.
That file is the torrent file. You now hace to have a torrent program to download the file that you want. I am on a mac and use 'transmission'

Available here:

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19378

There are lots of other programs available. Do a google search. I think that they are called bittorent clients.

From the Slyck site mentione above (great site, Thnxs)

What is a .torrent file?
To download something with BitTorrent, you must have a .torrent file. This file contains in it a location that tells the BitTorrent client where to go to find the tracker that manages the uploading and downloading of the archive. An archive is a complete set for downloading which may include one file or many files. The one .torrent file contains the archive information also. To download on this network it is simply a matter of clicking on the .torrent file in your web browser, then the BitTorrent client kicks in and asks where you'd like to save the archive. That's it, from there you just sit back and watch the client work it's magic.

I'm finally having success with puretna and bitcomet. I did have trouble viewing a .avi file till I realized I needed to get codecs. There's a site that u can plug your data into that tells you the codec you need and can then get free on the internet. I was told I needed xivd and this did help but I still couldn't get both sound and picture. On a hunch I downloaded the codec divd and then everything played well.

Thanks to all for getting me started!

Look for a program called gspot. It's free, and about 200 kb. You install it and right-click on video files and Open With -> gspot. It let's you know the video type, (sometimes the extensions are incorrectly labeled on torrents), differentiates between different .avi types, (divX 3 low motion, divX 5, Xvid), lets you know if the file length is correct, and if you have the necessary codecs installed. Use it and you'll find it indispensible.
