Everyone says the Jays need starting pitching. IMHO their biggest need is catching! They need a receiver that can call a game, is solid defensively, can hit above .200 with some power and isn't prone to striking out.

I agree. If you look back to previous WS teams, most of them had all-star quality catchers. Example Posey and Molina recently. As they say, you need to be strong up the middle. Starts with catching.

Here
Cano? He is looking for a 10 year, +$300,000,000.00 deal... and I think the only baseball man who could ever even consider such a deal died three years ago: George Steinbrenner.

Guerrero? He is unproven and looking for a deal better than his 5 year $32,000,000.00 deal with the Dodgers that fell through. The chance of the BJ's doing that are, at least, -100%.

And I have a feeling the BJ's are going to stick with Goins... and why not? He is definitely a star-in-the-making defensively and has shown that he can hit, even if not as yet consistently. If Bautista, Encarnacion, Lawrie, Rasmus and Lind or whoever replaces him show up, they can afford to carry Goins even if he hits .225.

A competent catcher is an urgent need. Arencibia has the tools and talent but, for whatever reason, has not been able to develop them and is a liability.

I hope that the BJ's take a run at Masahiro Tanaka... the more recent crop of Japanese pitchers has turned out to be quite competent.

Replacing the new hitting coach with either John Olerud or Joe Carter? Maybe if they're interested in the job?
Then, hijacked the entire Cubans national team :D

Carter? I'm hoping he sticks to commercials.

What coaching credentials does Olerud have?
I hear you, but hey everyone has to start somewhere.

Cano is 31 and wants a 10 year deal. We already have one 20 million guy in Reyes. So I would say donuts, bagels, to this.

Goins will be fine for us. We need defense. Not offense. Watch reyes for a full year. Lawrie will be better. And Rasmus is 26. He isn't a superstar but I think he about to enter those 3-4 productive years when he could get to 30 hour, 100 rbi and maybe .275 average with hot defense.

Catcher......that's the hot spot we need....and it will cost us a bit of our bullpen to get it.

Washington seems to be heading towards hiring Cal Ripken to manage.....Cubs (ok not a winning franchise)...are interviewing top coaches of winning teams like Dave Martinez......and we stick with John Gibbons sitting in the corner of the dugout

Maybe you should be knocking the guy that brung him here????

It will be interesting to see who the Jays get as replacements for Murphy and Mattola. Usually managers get to pick their coaches, I think most of last years coaches were AA's choices.
Personally, I say lets see what Gibbons does in April and May.If it is same old. same old, say bye bye. If it same old, same old, it may be bye bye AA too.

Jeez you really think so.

If there is one thing that recent history teaches us is that long term contracts just don't work out.

Look at Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols, my God the Angels are stuck with these two for years.

Maybe I'm being a little naive but I don't believe any GM will go 10 years and 300 million with Cano.

Let us see if I'm right on this one.

I think that's what I am doing. Hiring Gibbons was a mistake. Keeping him is a far bigger mistake. Do we want to be 12-24 again before acting on that mistake.

Well, the Blue Jays are either going to sign each player or they're not. 50-50 chance either way.

In reality, I don't expect Toronto to be a big player for either of those guys.

I was having a little fun with Ironhead when I posted that

About the Cudan ... I have no idea ... how good he is or if the Jays are even interested.

However where Cano is involved ... 50/50 ... hey I like those odds, do not necessarily believe, but I like very much.
You know if the moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars ... well you never know.

I would like to see Paul Molitor as our hitting coach, I dont know if he coaches though
His name had come up over the years as manager material. Classy, intelligent guy.

Too old to start working his way up?

.... ooooooh that'd be nice.

I don't see how anyone - including the Yankees will give him what he's asking.

I used to think there was no chance but perhaps there's a slight one.... he would be at home with the Dominican Jays.....

Catcher is more important though now.

I would love to see him here. What about Visquel as a coach too? I know he was interested in staying here as a coach last year and he has managerial aspirations.

.... and yeah - Alomar. He lives in Toronto and is still working for the Jays. He spends a lot of time working with players here already. I don't understand why he doesn't have a coaching role already.
