Hey just wondering if an upconverting DVD player plays in true 1080p or is more like 720p. I've been told that you can tell the real difference between an upcovert display and blue-ray, but the ads for the upconverter players state that you get full 1080p. What gives??

anyone that is trying to convince you up converting is as good as blu-ray is simply selling snake oil!! There is no way that adding lines of resolution which is what upconverting is vaguely speaking is better than 1080p blu ray resolution which already exists on a disc. Even on a 32 inch 720p tv blu ray will always look better.

yes, i've tried many upconvert systems and it's not even close to a true high-def player display (HD-DVD or Bluray). Don't waste your money on an upconvert player since a true high def player will upconvert as well and probably better than the one you were thinking of.

up up and no way

Like said before, any HD DVD player or Blue Ray player will upconvert regular DVDs. I have both and no, they don't make regular DVDs look as good as HD or BR. But they do make regular DVDs look better than a regular DVD player.

What their ads are saying is that they will play a BR disc at 1080p and they will upconvert a regular DVD and simulate HD as best it can. But it can never look as good as a true HD source.

BTW, as I said I have an old HD DVD player. anyone interested? Will most likely be a collector's item soon *lol*

I agree... they make standard DVDs look better... paid 30 bucks for an upconverting DVD player... plugged it in with an HDMI cable... the difference between my old player and this one is night and day.... not interested in dropping the cash on blue ray right now...

What people don't understand is that their HDTV upconverts. It has to scale up TV or DVD's low resolution to match the resolution of the TV. The image quality has to do with what device has the better processor. Blowing up a DVD image will never look as good as a Blu-ray that already has a high resolution. You can't add resolution to a DVD. A new upconverting player may be better than an old player but does not come close to blu-ray.
