I drink bottled water almost exclusively, mostly because I like the taste better, and being told that it's healthier. Recently though, I've heard some conflicting reports. Some people seem to think that bottled water has more junk in it than anything else, and that it is just a huge waste of money.

Always wanting to save a buck, perhaps I should got back to drinking tap water; after all, it's free (more or less). I don't even feel like spending money on a water filtration system, either. In the long run, the savings could really add up. Any thoughts??

I pick tap. Filtered.
I drink filtered tap water at home cuz i prefer warmer (hot but not burning hot) water than cold. I like the taste better too. I think its the warmness that makes the difference in taste. I can down a bottle of warm water in 1 gulp whereas, i can only take little sips with bottled/cold water.
Plus its cheaper in long run i guess.

Did anyone read a lil while back those newspaper ads, Toronto Water had about some elderly woman who had been drinking tap water for years (and continues to do)?

I dunno whether this was legit or not.

..recently 60 minues had a segmet, concusion , bottled water was"dead water", meaning it did not have the chemicals in it that Tap water has, but the expert said that was a good thing.

About Brita water filters - the all in one pitcher; Does anyone know how long the filters last before you need to replace them?? Also, I could never figure out how to change them. It seems like they are stuck in there!

I drink more bottled water in the summer and keep my fridge stocked with it for when I go outside. In the winter I just drink tapped water.

The problem with Brita is that the container itself becomes dirty after a few uses.
So to keep the water from getting dirty you have to wash it once a month.

Not really worth it IMO

You're right. That's the main reason I haven't bought one - too much hassle.

As for all the chemicals supposedly in tap water, I don't buy it. It can't be that harmful if the water commission lets it flow out of the tap, right??

I saw that episode.. experts said bottles and filtered water were not as good as tap water for you.. and Andy Rooney also spoke about his shock at how much people will pay for a bottle of water.. which involves a lot less processeing but is more expensive than gasoline

I do not buy plain bottled water, unless I am travelling outside of Canada of USA. However, lately, instead of soft drinks, I have been drinking Nestle flavoured water.. because it is sweetened with Splenda (not acesulfame-potassium) and it is only about $0.36 for 500mL

I saw on a consumer show that said the Brita filters use resin. This increases the sodium content of the water so they're probably not the best thing for someone on a sodium restricted diet.
Wow, that's something I didn't know.

According to a friend who works as a engineer who specializes in water treatment he believes that tap water is fine and in some cases better than bottled water.

It's not fair to say bottled water is better in general you have to talk about specific brands. From what I've heard the standards on bottle water are such that you could fill up bottles of water and call it Terb Springs and sell it. The regulations are very lax.

Penn and Teller had/have a series called Bullshit where they debunk myths the segment on bottle water is hilarious. They open a fake cafe and serve people tap water in bottles and the people are claiming they can taste the difference.

In the end I'll drink whatever's in front of me if I'm thirsty.
