Unless you are married or anti-social, I would say to join a gym.

a) Plenty of machines for you to never out-grow
b) Check out chicks in spandex
c) Don't need any space in your crib, so you could get a smaller joint, if you need the dough

I would also recommend a gym over a bowflex, but for slightly different reasons.

Basically, any machine workout is going to be fairly limiting. Most of them tend to isolate certain muscle groups to work them exclusively. This is fine when you're getting started, but evenually you're best to move on to free weights and functional exercises that provide much greater challenge by working whole groups of muscles at a time.

If you have the money for Bowflex, you are likely better off investing it in a good gym with a good trainer to show you the ropes and get you off and running.

Join a gym.

The best motivation is embarrassment (if you are overweight). Well that is my experience.

Free weights are much cheaper and much better at targetting specific muscles. My personal opinion, worth what you paid for it.

bought it for my wife 3 years ago and never even looked at it. I joined a gym about six months ago and started using the bow flex and it is amazing.
If you use it you will like it guaranteed.

Ok, this isn't about a comparison between Bowflex and the gym. I would agree that the gym is better. But I'm looking for actual feedback on Bowflex, preferably from anyone who has used it.

They are good but they do have some limitations with range of movement. It depends what you're looking for. If you want convenience and are not concerned about technique and being able to use a full range of motion then get one. Otherwise I would recommend dumb-bells and a bench to start. Smaller investment and you wiill be surprised what you can do with this little bit of equipment. If you want some cardio get a good elliptical trainer.

As mentioned above a GYM is better but I Know was you are coming from.

Sometimes it is good to have a machine if you are going to miss a workout and you do not have time to get to the gym

The bow Flex does not seem to give the same sensation as free weights or even a machine with weights so I do not care for it.

I don't have a bowflex but thought about it and decided my own assortment of weights and machines are enough. A friend raves about his.

I prefer a home gym for the same reason I have a home laundry, it might be more expensive but convenience and control of the place are important factors for me. I don't want to wait to use equipment. I like to change or shower in privacy. I like to sing "Fat Bottom Girls" while riding my exercise bike.
Why would people think if I prefer to workout in isolation at my own pace that I'm socially inept?

Next to the money pit.
my 2 cents

If you want to save time and don't want to commute to the gym for a 30 minute workout, then purchase a set of premium freeweights. A good set of dumbells and barbell would be all you need to workout.

The expensive machines at the gym only focus one group of muscles, generally speaking.

Question: Do you value your time? If so, then all you need a is machine for cardio and a set of freeweights for your muscles at home.

If you know someone who has a membership at Direct Buy.. ask them to check out the price for you... I see them selling quite a few of them to their members.

Can you say "gay-flex"? Don't waste your money. Eat a good varied diet, walk when you can, avoid supplements, don't smoke and you will be in great shape. This type of crap just takes advantage of idiots with body image problems and extra space in the basement.

You may be in good shape, but you won't be in great shape. None of what you mentioned increases muscle mass. And lots of ladies love the muscles. ;)
