Anybody here have or recently had and/or have kids who have braces? Is it true they cause $6,000 (and I thought dental implants are expensive and they are)?

sounds about right for conventional ortho. Might want to look into alternatives like Invisalign, which is more expensive but better than a mouth full of metal.

Shop around. I had braces on in my late thirties for a couple of years. The cost was about $2500, if I remember correctly.

Depends on the case. If your teeth are crooked as hell, it'll cost more. My cousin was a moderate case and her braces cost $5000 ten years ago. I hear that today Invisalign costs about the same as braces did a decade ago, so regular braces are probably cheaper than that now.

Shopping around is a good idea. However, the OP should check the practitioner's references and reputation, as well. there are a few scammers out there when it comes to orthodontics, as with any other treatments.

Invisalign is not for everyone, however. We went through looking at the options for my two brats a few years ago. The orthodontist we chose was very reputable and quoted us a price of about $6k for each child, with follow-up for some time after the braces came off.

Thanks guys. While $6,000 is outrageous, it seems to be the "norm" for braces.
It's expensive, yes, but they make a change that lasts for the rest of your life. Well worth it to avoid potential problems and boost confidence.

My friend's employer's dental plan also paid $2,000 of the $6,000 cost. She works in marketing so appearance is important (we humans are so shallow).

i've been meaning to get mine.
you don't HAVE to get invisiline....

but 4-5k for a good job is to be expected.

Question is: how does he find, we, me, us, find a good practitioner?

about 6K and if you don't have benefits pay in a single year and take the health credit on your taxes. I suggest you interview a couple of doctors to get a feel. some play with the numbers, so you want to know the all-in price.
