i think being a man of substance or being all about the money are not mutually exclusive...lots of people leave their employ for more money,,that doesnt diminish their substance....keep in mind his agent and Burnett are going to be under pressure by Major League Players association to take as much money as they can

If you leave someplace for $60 million over 4 years for another place that offered $54 million then it's money and not substance i.e. staying in a place where they gave you a chance, you grew, you bonded with the coaches, your teammates, the city/fans.

I'll agree, there are limits i.e., $75 million as opposed to $54 million is harder to turn down.

shack..all this utopian talk about, bonding and growing ...i actually kinda sympathize with that view...but remember we live in a hardened capitalist, free market world..i wish there was room for sentiment, but baseball is just a business..i still believe you can take the money and run and still have susbstance and integrity

I guess that 19 - 10 record plus offering the Jays the best 1 - 2 in baseball has silenced many of AJ's critics here and generally? :p

Good to read they are putting together a strong extension package for him and Doc, as well as recognising the need for a stronger batting line-up.

I am not holding my breath that Burnett will re-sign with the Jays. I certainly hope he does but not at a huge cost.

Halladay must be rewarded even more so.

The Jays had many injuries this year and even though Tampa played quite well this year, it would have been interesting to see a healthy Jays lineup play the Rays. The Rays were mostly healthy the entire year with the exception of Crawford and Longoria near the end.

The Hammer
Marcum factor completely complicates things, and there is no guarantee McGowan comes back 100%...while they need him more than ever I still think its too much for a player who's been healthy for 2 full major league seasons.

They are between a rock and a hard place.

AJ is like that little girl with the curl. When he is good he is really good, but when he is bad he is terrible. Trouble is that he is usually good half the time and bad the other half. A .500 pitcher until this year.

Very true. What's also true is that in spite of his history he will be very coveted on the open market.

The guy is a competitor and even though he did win 18 games, he still had enough run support because his ERA is over 4 runs a game.

They do have some guys coming up and although it would be difficult to compare the pitching this year (which was excellent), Burnett is not worth more than Halladay. Roy should be the highest paid pitcher in baseball.

Regardless, Burnett will be very happy with the money coming to him.

You set yourself up for this one...

I think and I might be slammed for for this thought but if you can't re-sign Burnett then you should look at trading Halladay .... With the injuries in the rotation and losing Burnett this team will have at best another 80-85 win season and in two years Halladay may just get sick of losing and say good bye ..
Hey, let's trade away the best pitcher in baseball (Halladay in my opinion) for whatever we can get. Losing Burnett and Halladay would be devastating.

Keep Roy happy. Period. He is a class individual and I still enjoy watching him on the mound more than anyone.
