I bought the "Boxee Box" thing and hooked it up. Gives me a nice remote control and ability to browse through content. Actually I find it easier browsing the Boxee interface than it was to find content on cable tv...

I'm impressed by how much content there is to watch there. I thought I would primarily use it for Netflix, but there's a lot of TV shows and other content there too, music, many Canadian TV shows, lots of web based video. Oh yeah, and tons of porn (you have to go into settings and enable adult content).

Who the hell needs cable TV?

I agree with the post up thread--I am upgrading my home internet service to the fastest I can get (teksavvy cable modem). It would be nice if there were more content available through Netflix but there's enough there for my needs, and I assume it's only going to get better in the near future, between Netflix and other similar services.

I ended my abusive relationship with Rogers a few months back. I set up with this site that allows to get an American IP address www.usvideo.org

It tells you how to get an American Netflix account (so superior to anything in here) but if you have a friend or relative down there it also works. I can watch all the US stations plus things like Hulu, on top of that it allows you access to the BBC and ITV sites in Britain.

I am a huge sports fan and EVERYTHING is available online, yeah its not in HD but with the prices that Rogers and Bell charge ($16 bucks a month for Setanta alone) it doesnt bother me. I use the following.

If it wasn't for live sports in HD where you don't have to worry about buffering, I would absolutely do the same thing and cancel my Rogers account.

Alas, I love Jays, Wimbledon, NBA Finals in HD.

Online experience hasn't been able to replicate the cable experience of live sports.

That's what pubs are for. To be honest I tend not to watch a lot of sports during regular season, but I get into the playoffs, and I'll hit the pub with a few friends. I enjoy the energy of the room as much as the game.

I hear you bud. Live sports are becoming more and more exclusive to pay per view and subscription channels. I would have never thought I would pay to watch the leafs on their on channel (leafs tv) but I am!! If I didn't watch sports I would be all over OTA HD antenna thing.

Great thread guys!!
The www.usvideo.org is only $4.95/month plus the cost of netflix.
My question is, how is the sound and picture quality when you connect to your TV?

You are right, f/u Rogers. I asked Rogers 2 weeks ago, to get my cable disconnected on June 26 as I am leaving the country, no problem they said. Anyways, today, I was disconnected. After 4 hours on the phone, and promises I would be back in business, nothing. They told me it was working. I missed the game. They will have to send an asshole. Then I got all these email of bills, first, 48, then 98, the 151, then 192. They said, my service would be working in 5 min. Then they want to send someone on Monday, and I see a 50 dollar service call. Rogers is scum.

What pisses me off if my broker called me 3 montht ago and told me to but Rogers, I told him they were scum. He said, it was a good but, to I bought 20K. So now on Monday, I go to Rogers and tell them to Fuck off and I will look for a new Investment Manager.

Anyway the bottom line, Rogers go fuck yourself, but wait until I sell my stock.

Excellent point. But some of us aren't quite so financially savvy, so a few pints of beer and some chicken wings, next thing you know, you're spending your whole cable bill after three outings at the pub.

It depends on what you watch but on average think Youtube quality between 480 and 720p. You can try the Candian netflix for a month for free and decide if the PQ is good enough before signing up for the US version.
