People who cry about price of cable (or other essentials such as cell service) need to get a better paying job (or their ass back to school)

Netflix is ok but certainly not a replacement for real TV
Things like HBO, Centre Ice, or NFL Sunday Ticket you need cable to watch
Cable is not a basic need

If I was not such a general sports fan, i would definitely explore other options than cable.

Think of Netflix as a cheap replacement for basic cable, and iTunes/play/etc as the replacement for premium channels.

Cable is not an essential.
I have Netflix & Hulu
They are in addition to cable

I repeat people who complain about cost are either cheap or do not earn enough
(eg there are no sports or news channels on Netflix)

You do not need to subscribe to cable to get live sports, every major North American sports league has a streaming service now available on the Apple TV, Android box or gaming console at a fraction of the price you would pay for cable.

Course it is

Netflix quality is shit
As of Jan 23 2015 those of us with a decent package can enjoy 4K broadcasts on cable
Netflix already supports 4k. I also find with cable, the compression is brutal. OTA is even superior to the current cable offerings in terms of resolution, and is free.

It's not true 4K (& has no audio either)
At the current time Netflix offers 14 shows in 4K (and many are older shows so you are unlikely to rewatch, only 6 shows are current)
You get far more content via other sources

Oh plus Netflix is super restrictive in which devices can even get 4K (things like Roku4, Bolt, or Shield)

You can blather on, but it has been pointed out to you that you can get live sports online and you can get high quality content from iTunes and Google. OTA gets you live news.

Cable is about as essential as a horse and buggy.

If you think this it can only be due to ignorance.... but for those who don't want to read entire thread:
Premium sports on iTunes / Google suck donkey balls due to massive DRM restrictions. You either do not use these services yourself or are ignorant in how the systems work to promote them.
OTA is good for local news and sports, channel wise they suck (I have access to over 300 channels, you have what, 12?)

4K is the future and it is going to be pushed to people who pay first
Maybe 10 years from now the cheapies might see it

That's your opinion and your welcome to it . Again not everyone has a computer nor wants one . Ever think of that . I spend 4 months of the year in an area that has no hydro or internet service . I use generators for power and use a satellite dish for TV . I use my Bell receiver . Since I have no internet what do you suggest that I do with out the dish to watch TV .

Cable or a dish may not be for you but then again who cares what your essentials are . It's not about what you need or want . Not everyone lives the way you do . It seems that if other peoples needs are not compatible to yours then they are in the horse and buggy era .
Many people use only wood to heat their homes . Since you just flick a switch for heat they must be in the horse and buggy era .

You really need to take a break from this form . Your opinions are getting dumber and dumber with every post .

I have had dishnet for the last 5 years at $100 a year for 2 receivers fully open. Now in the last 3 years i have added IPTV which gets me the movies and shows that have already aired. I would never pay for satellite or any other monthly based service. Their monopoly is coming to an end.

How do I stream Blue Jays baseball, NFL games, and World Juniors all at a cheaper price than cable?
Good question.

Plus F1, etc.

I don't watch movies (no patience) or older TV shows so Netflix and Movie Network doesn't do anything for me. I do watch sports and the news.
Netflix is now producing the finest tv shows of them all. If you watch new shows, they can't be beat. Master of None, Bloodline, Kimmy Schmit, Making of a Murderer, etc etc. If you only watch news and sports, you don't need it, but for those of us that don't exclusively, Netflix is the best bargain available.

I won't give up cable until there is an alternate, consistent high quality way to watch sports. I have cable, Netflix, Apple TV and whatever else might allow me to watch what I feel like watching. If it comes to the point that I will need to reduce my TV costs I will start to rethink my life.
