Can Barack Obama win in 2008?

Any takers on this idea? I don't think the MIC owns the guy (yet). He doesn't look buyable to me. Perhaps he'd run on a ticket with Powell and redeem the madness of the last 6 years.. that combined with an impeachment proceeding seems like the ticket.

Alas, 25 years of Reagan/Bush (with a curious interregnum) has probably made a black American (or a woman) unelectable. Amoral government has made the population too intellectually supine & uncritical, too attached to their prejudices, too goddamned lazy to realize that gender and 'race' don't matter to ability. At this point, I don't think Colin Powell could be elected, either; same deal. It ain't Obama's politics, which are in any event too liberal, after decades of relentless right wing big lies; it's the simple fact of his skin colour. Bluntly, the American people don't know right from wrong any more..

I was spending a lot of time in the Chicago area when he came onto the scene (even before his address at the democratic convention).

I always found him to be articulate, concise and thoughtful. This would definately be a stretch from the past 6 years

Then we should invite him to come to Canada and run here. He's got a lot a drive, smart, youthful, and appears to be dead honest. Scary to see that in a politician.

Why don't we extend "affirmative action" to the office of President and Prime Minister? We all know how successful "affirmative action" has been in the private sector.

BaracK Obama will definitely win - as senator. Hillary stands in his way to the White House.

Obama is actually considered moderate. He has called out to the Dems to reach out to the christians and win them back. He also called out his own party to not be scared of being viewed as religious and turning their backs on the religious and morality. He has often professed his faith publically. There is actually a lot of unease about him among the hard left who want to distance themselves from the evangelicals.

But I agree, Hillary is the main player here.

Same here. The more I hear about him, the more I like him. While his more moderate views turn off some people, I like it. He sounds like a guy that is willing to work with everyone for the greater good (ex. his willingness to work w/McCain over ethics reform, etc) and he sounds like his own man.

If I had a vote, I'd strongly consider him for sure.

Obama will be in play, but not for the top of the ticket. He will be the running mate for Hillary.
Not much mud slinging the right can do against a women and a black man. Brilliant strategy.
Although I believe the democrats could nominate Sharpton or Mickey Mouse and still win.

Only if the GOP nominate another Bush type neo-con.
They don't have a viable candidate this time around. The smart and good candidates will stay away from 08.
It is a "gimme" for the Democrats. Remember how the Repiublicans burned Dole against Bubba?
They going to find another sucker this time around. My money is on Frist.

That's what I thought the last time around but I found that despite what I thought, it turns out to be impossible to underestimate the intellegence of the average voter.:D

I don't even think that will happen. Obama is just selling books and getting front page on the "notion" he's considering to run.....still just to sell the threads. Bill Clinton told him, it's good to run for President, just don't do it when you're too young. LOL! I can think of another 1st time Senator who tried it, John Edwards.

Hillary won't pick Barrack for a running mate. He's too good a Senator and great for Illinois. But the one she might pick is Harold Ford, soon to be Senator of TN and a House Representative for a long tenure. The location sounds familiar for a great Clinton President of the past.

TN = Tennessee? Wasn't Bill from Arkansas?

You raise a good point. It would be tough for the Republicans to beat a woman and a black guy.

My opinion. Race and gender isn't an advantage.

Nearly every POTUS is male and whose lineage
goes back to Wester Europe. I can't recall one
exception. Don't bet against a streak.
You raise a good point also. But lets just say the Republicans had Condoleeza Rice(she is black AND a woman) running for president, and lets assume they found a gay Chinese guy to be her vice president running mate, than I think that Hillary and Obama would kick their ass.

They would definately kick their ass. If the Republican Party nominated a gay Chinese running mate, they would alienate their core support. It would be like the Deomcrats nominating a pro life running mate.

I realize this is speculation but I think its too presumptuous to assume Hillary would get the nod for the dems. If she did get the nod, I doubt very much she would chose Obama for a running mate. Running mates are usually chosen for how many electoral votes they can bring to the table. Illinois has 21 electoral votes that are already in the Democratic side. Nominating Obama would be a waste a best.

If Obama wants to reach higher office, he'll have to beat Hillary, which I think is possible.

He has to strike now or wait 15 years. No one will pick him for VP this time around.

15 years is a long time to dodge political landmines.

at the Y between heaven and hell
I met Obama during his recent visit to his dad's homeland ( no, not in his village near Kisumu but at a reception at the US embassy thrown in his honor ) .

He does not seem to bear well the attention he attracts wherever he goes ( needs to mature a bit more, perhaps, and get used to being in the limelight ) . To me , the exalted expectations most Dems seem to have of him just highlight the dearth of credible alternatives within their camp ....
