Canada - US Relations

Today's Globe & Mail had a front page article about a tragic airplane crash where several men perished after a hunting trip. The airplane got into trouble when it took off without first de-icing (stupid IMHO) and subsequently crashed into Lake Erie.

While I do feel sorry for the family and loved ones of those who perish, I also feel bouyed by the photo on page A7. Here we see a US Coast Guard ship in Lake Erie searching for bodies & wreckage. The part that pleased me was the fact that high up on the mast of the US ship was the maple leaf flying proudly. True, the start & stripes were up a little higher, but I thought it a nice gesture that a US ship would fly the maple leaf so prominently. I suppose Canadian ships would also fly the stars & stripes, but somehow doubt that any other ship would fly any other flag other then their own.

To those who say Canada & the US are not closely related, I refer you to the photo on page A7 and reply "Bah. Humbug."

This is standard flag etiquitte of vessels sailing foreign waters.

The flag of the host nation is flown forward and the home flag astern.

I have heard that these were examples of affirmative action for people with the right family connection$ and I do mean $.

with respect to your comments on university degrees- there are many a moron with one. I am not saying GWB is a moron though- as I have never met him- just that having a degree doesn;t preclude being an idiot

it would certainly be the rare moron that could get through not one but two Ivy League schools, get elected Governor of Texas (Texas defines hard hitting politics) and then make it to the White House. Even incredibly smart people find the weeding process for POTUS a difficult one (as Dean is learning).

Many universities in the US have Legacy programs that give preferential treatment (think of it as Affirmative Action for White kids) to children of Alum. Harvard for example admits 40% of the Alum children that apply, this from a school that only admits 11% of applicants and turns down 2,000 HS valedictorians each year. Princeton is much harder to get into.
