Car purchase inquiry

Hi all,

Just wondering......me being realistic in terms of immediate affordability......which of the following new 2004 models would be recommended?

suzuki aerio hatchback/wagon
pontiac sunfire sedan
chevy cavalier sedan
chevy optra sedan, optra5
mazda3 sedan
mitsubishi lancer es

i'm kinda leaning more on the sunfire, as it will be my first car, and it is the cheaper of the bunch. what do you think? thanks.

Small GM cars are junk when new even....I would prefer a Honda Civic or Accord..But out of the choiced listed, Consumer Reports likes the Mazda 3 best....

GM cars are the lowest quality. But most ppl buy the lower models b/c they are inexpensive and they need basic transportation.
You get what you pay for.

ok, what is the high/low i can expect for the mazda3 after taxes/freight.....etc... only extras i look for are air condition, keyless entry

Go to Shopping Tools and then Build & Price. You can find out what the cost will be there.

For the base model adding the Convenience Package (which includes Remote Keyless Entry) and A/C, assuming you live in Ontario (taxes) you are looking at minimum $21,752.25 off the lot.

Now if you took every option including the 84 month comprehensive warranty you could drive the price to $36,222.75.

i've been there........total will come up to msrp 25k max - this is rounded up. i want to know, factoring the invoice price, what is the most or least i will pay.

What do you mean "factoring the invoice price"? The site shows you Freight & PDE, PST, GST .... is there some other cost you think they are not including?

"factoring invoice price" i want the manufacturer's price, instead of the dealer msrp price.

If you're a real aggressive negotiator, you should be able to knock $1500 - $2000 off the MSRP.

I'd go with the Mazda in that list. But at that price range you should be able to get a Honda Civic as well, which I would prefer. Mazdas have Ford parts in them. **yeccchh**

actually its made in japan....parts are from japan, although mazda is a division of ford. also there is a site www.intellichoice.com that gives manufacturer prices for all cars.....its in u.s.$$$, but you can manually convert to cdn.$$ and it'll be a very close approximation.

Sunfire, Cavalier platforms may literally be as old as you. They are basic transportation. Actually fairly dependable too, but their age definately shows. On the upside, insurance is reasonable, and spare parts are cheap and plentiful.

The Suzuki is kind of wierd looking, Mitsubishi has quality issues (moreso than GM), the Optra is Korean built if I am not mistaken and has no real track record here in Canada or the U.S.

Kind of narrows the choice down to the Mazda, doesn't it?

With those cars as the only selections, the Red Rocket is looking pretty damn good. But if I had to chose one I would go with the Mitsubishi Lancer, by far the best of the lot.

wow, one for the lancer.....i actually looked into it a great deal also. but i'm still undecided, as there is a significant price difference between this and the mazda3.

A base model Toyota Echo should be in your price range. Much better option than the domestics

How many years do you intend to keep the car ?

4 years or less: take the Sunfire/Cavalier. Inexpensive & great clearing prices now; to be discontinued. Parts easy to find. 140 hp engine.

5 years or more: Mazda3. Mazda Protege-like reliability. 148 hp engine runs really quiet for a 4 cylinder. Very smooth handling. Interior dash is best of the japanese small cars.

Stay away from Optra. This one doesn't have a history.

Lancer is probably good, but not enough dealerships & Mitsubishi Canada is shaky.
