Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday that Canada will continue to pursue “deep negotiations” with the U.S. on resolving issues of trade before resorting to retaliatory measures.

Carney was speaking in Toronto ahead of a scheduled meeting with Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who has called on the federal government to hit back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s increasingly escalatory tariffs on several sectors of the global economy that have impacted Canadian industries.

“Premier Ford and I are both interested in results for, in my case, for workers and families across Canada, of course in his case for the province of Ontario,” the prime minister told reporters. “And we’re looking to work to those ends as constructively as possible right now with the Americans.

“There’s times to hit back and there’s times to talk, and right now is the time to talk.”

Carney told reporters he would brief Ford on the U.S. negotiations when the two meet later on Thursday.

Carney and Trump tasked their teams with reaching deals “quickly” on steel, aluminum and energy following their meeting at the White House on Oct. 7, with other tariff-hit sectors like autos expected to follow after further talks.

The Prime Minister’s Office has said both sides expect work to conclude on those initial deals in the coming weeks.

“We’re engaged in deep negotiations, intensive negotiations, on several sectors of the Canadian economy,” Carney said.

“We want to make progress in those negotiations. I’ll be briefing the premier on the status of those negotiations.”

New U.S. tariffs affecting softwood lumber and furniture went into effect on Tuesday, with additional duties on heavy trucks and pharmaceuticals expected to kick in Nov. 1.

Ford has continued to advocate for a more aggressive approach than what Carney is currently pursuing, threatening to cut off energy and resource exports if the U.S. doesn’t relent on industry-crushing tariffs.

“If we can’t get a deal, we have to hit them back twice as hard,” he told a conference on U.S.-Canada relations in Toronto hosted by BMO and Eurasia Group earlier this month.

In September, Canada lifted its retaliatory tariffs on about $60 billion worth of U.S. goods that were otherwise compliant with North American free trade rules in order to restart the trade talks.

Both countries are due to review the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) next July, with public consultation and study already underway.

“The strategy has to take all of that into account, and deliver the results,” Carney said, suggesting the more conciliatory approach will help inform the CUSMA review.

“We’re starting from a stronger position (on tariffs), but we’re also very acutely aware and very focused on the fact that we can make it better. And so we will do everything we can to make it better.”

He said he made a lot of progress on trade deals before DoFo screwed it all up with the $75 million ads.
DoFo is the worst.

The thing is, Dougy showed Carney the ad before he ran it, and Carney didn't stop him. I do believe the timing was terrible but to be honest, Carney should have told him not to do it unless the talks fall apart.

I like Carney, and he still has my vote, but I call it as I see it, not just what fits my preferred narrative.

You have a narrative.
You like DoFo and will excuse corruption and major screwups.

Did Carney actually ever explicitly say he saw the ad beforehand?

Carney mum on whether he saw Ontario's anti-tariff ad beforehand
Ford clearly stated it on CNN and I believe him and the fact that Carney isn't denying it pretty much tells one all they need to know. Ford and Carney get along and guaranteed Ford wouldn't have side-stepped Carney.

Why would you believe DoFo?
Carney is a smarter politician and won't publicly call out DoFo.

I do agree Carney is smarter than Dougy, but to assess if he's a better politician is too soon in Carney's political career.

Being smarter doesn't necessarily translate into being a better politician.
Ok, we are in an age where stupid politicians can win, as we see in america and Alberta.

I'd say DoFo is not very bright but maybe not as stupid as trump. He's just as corrupt but its Ontario and the scale is lower. But he's using all the same techniques and his coverups are obvious if you look. Burner phones, NDA's, secret deals etc. The insider dealing is also very obvious if you look and very old school.
He's better at it than trump, who just doesn't care if he's caught, and better at it then Smith. And he knows how to play the populist, eating ice cream, 'hey guys' all while he spends most of the time doing fundraisers for insider deals or at the cottage.

Carney is better at getting things done quietly and without pissing people off, so far.

Yes, Ford is a populist and knows what the middle wants to hear to get their votes and rolls with it. He is an excellent politician. When his meter goes off because he's pissed off to many in the middle, he pulls back and backtracks. He doesn' t give a rat's ass about radical righties or loony far leftists. I don't like Smith at all. She is a female Trumpy. I like Carney; I have no complaints so far. He's better than Justin and garners much more respect here and internationally. Is he good at politics? Ask me in a couple of years.

Ford is not an excellent politician, he's good at playing politics.
Everything he does is corrupt as shit so he is hardly 'good' or excellent.

All he cares about is self dealing and selling of assets to donors and cashing in on their return donations.
Nothing he does if for Ontario.

Get into Frank's program. Anything opposes him is bad...there's no middle ground...

Doug Ford won a landslide in 2018, no surprise there. The electorate was done with Wynne, and I’ll admit, I voted for her. Just like they were done with Justin.

Then came 2022, Ford pulled off another majority, not an easy feat this time, after people actually got to see the Ford government in action but he easily rolls into another majority.

And now, 2025 , Ford wins even more seats and another majority. Hmmm. And yet you’re claiming he’s not a good politician? Okay, Franky…
You’re free to hate the player, but at least be honest about the game, even when it doesn’t fit your ideology.

In 2025, Duggler went on that anti Trump blitz and then suddenly called a snap election. The other parties had no chance to introduce leaders and candidates and may have been short of funds.

The Tories are going to snarfle up most of farm and small town Ontario. The Libs and NDP have to get organized around the tenants' rights issues and any other issues that come up and get their faces in front of the camera.
