I totally agree but you are noting the phenomenon of the politicization of late night talk shows.

Many of us remember the late, great Johnny Carson was apolitical. Jay Leno was apolitical. Even Letterman was mostly apolitical. Letterman taking jabs at NBC owner and corporate behemoth GE didn't really ruffle the audience.

Politicization contributed somewhat to the fragmentation of the late night audience. The fact that there were three (four counting Gutfeld) talk shows on at 11:00 pm EST is probably a bigger factor. Perhaps that's why CBS wants to try something different.
Can't wait to see what CBS replaces it with.

It is also possible that this cancellation was part of Trump's settlement.
He wants to go after media that criticizes him anyway.
It couldn't be a part of any legal settlement.

It's likely Paramount thought Colbert was potentially too much trouble relative to the profit he brought in. We likely had one too many talk shows fragmenting the late night legacy network audience with a similar format.

Time will tell if CBS comes back later with another talk show in the time slot.

I think CBS should put on a show similar to the old Sabado Gigante where some scantily clad Latinas parade around in sketches and dance numbers. I'd stay up to wait for that. ;)

Well, not on paper, but he could have pressured them.
And Colbert goes after low hanging fruit, for the laughs.
I wouldn't characterize him as problematic in any way.
But yes, it is a dying comedy format.
I suspect with all the cord cutting more people watch the late night clips on YouTube than stay up to tune in for the actual program.

Although late night shows are increasingly a thing of the past, and even though they have cited financial reasons, cannot help think it is political.
Not a good sign if so.
Colbert should just go the route Conan O Brien has and most likely will.
COPE! late night shows are not at hing of the past...Colbert is...you lose viewership if you lean on 1 side...How's michelle's modern show/podcast (not late night show, those are the thing of the past)

Not written down, but it may well have been one.
That's still political.

The settlement is considered to have been done to make the deal go through, so it is the same underlying motivation.

Colbert and Kimmell are losing viewership...Jimmy was only pulling 2M max he's gonna be next...people are simply tired of their lame ass jokes...look how Jon Steward is reviving his career...Look how quiet Oliver and Meyers, too much progressive writers on your show isn't a good thing... Gutfeld is beating them, Imagine if Rogan had interest on a night show... I won't be surprise if Shane Gillis will get his own show next...these talk show hosts are too afraid of the progressives / cancel culture they lost their mojos of being funny.

Of course late night shows are a thing of the past.
One by one they are going to get cancelled after Kimmel, Fallon and Seth Myers retire.
Just saying COPE, while you are coping with a 4th liberal term, won't help you.

I watch the old clips of Carson and I long for those shows...Every now and then he'd stray into the political space but not for long.

Fallon is quite palatable...Kimmel and Colbert are insufferable most nights.

and here you are making an effort for another thread that leads to orangeman bad...seems a liberal victory can't mask the pain of a Trump win...

I grew up on Conan, Leno, and Letterman. Each very unique and funny. They all had a natural likeable comic charisma.

I tried watching Fallon (who I think has stayed relatively apolitical?) and while he has his moments, I've never found the same enjoyment from him, Kimmel, Colbert etc.

I thought Gutfield ended at 11 EST and all the others started almost half an hour after that?

Just like Shaq, Kimmel is grasping at anything to mask that pain...PTDS is a horrible disease...

I don't think the demise of the legacy network talk shows is all that deep politically. A whole lot of competition within the genre and with other genre. Young people have many entertainment options at their disposal. Someone pointed out that you can watch the best moments of Fallon, Colbert and Kimmel on YouTube. You don't have to sit through a sixty minute broadcast.

Now did Colbert find a niche being more pointed politically.........I would concur.

Not sure a Rogan would work in a sixty minute legacy network format with a bunch of commercial breaks to boot.

We are talking about how the diapered Don may have pressured CBS into terminating the show.
So it is very relevant.
Keep living vicariously celebrating the win of a President of a foreign state, while squirming about a 4th liberal term. lmfao.

Since they are seemingly abandoning the show completely, they have at least some plausible deniability that it is purely political.
Especially if they do, indeed, not come back with any kind of talk show there.

So you started a thread with the sole purpose of making Colbert's departure was because of Trump? Hence I said...more whining about Trump...who's coping?

Fallon has some likeability and vulnerability to him I find though whereas the other two are self righteous bulldozers.

Yeah, going after media for criticizing him is a Nazi thing to do, and it is yet another opportunity for me to mock him and have fun at your expense, while you squirm uncomfortably in your seat while having to put up with a 4th liberal term. lmfao.
So COPE!
