With Sympatico, if you want to change your IP you just disconnect and then reconnect to the net.

Is there a way to do the same thing with Rogers cable internet?

That blows. If you want to download stuff off the net, often you have to change your IP to avoid lengthly wait times. Sympatico is great for that...

DHCP IP addresses are linked to the MAC address of the device connected to the cable modem. If you clear your current IP address, then change the MAC address of your computers NIC or your router, when you reconnect you will get a new IP

just open a command window ("run cmd") and use the "ipconfig /release" command to clear the current IP. If you are using a router, there is probably a similar command in the router's WAN menus.

This command releases your hold on your current IP, and puts it back into the pool of IPs available for new IP requests. You now have no IP address.

You can now try a few options. a) power cycle the modem, then reboot your PC (or router); b) wait an hour or so then reboot; or c) change the MAC address on your NIC or router, then reboot.

Hmmm, having to reboot isn't worth it. With Sympatico, it's just a disconnect and reconnect click of the mouse.

Chalk one point up for Sympatico.

If you can change your mac in your nic configuration, then you don't need to reboot. Just release the current IP, disable the nic, change the mac, enable the nic, and renew the IP "ipconfig /renew". That will work every time.

Remember that you're changing your IP but not your unique Sympatico/Rogers ID number. That is tied to your modem and can still be used to identify you. That's how various law enforcement agencies can track people who try to evade them by simply changing their IPs.

Incorrecto! DHCP IP addresses have nothing to do with MAC address. But the DHCP server may only hand out IP addresses to known MAC addresses when you do a "renew". And you can't change the MAC address of a device.

guess again...your Rogers hostname is composed of your Cable-modem MAC address and the MAC address of the device (PC or router) connected to the router. Just do a nslookup on any Rogers customer IP. You get something like this - CPE000244ca9734-CM001225540c77.cpe.net.site.cable.rogers.com

CPE means Customer Premise Equipment aka your PC or router MAC. CM is your cable modem mac.

Most all routers today allow you to change the MAC address. Normally, people use this function when first connecting a router to their cable-modem. They use this "clone" function to apply the MAC address of their PC to the router, since most do not release their IP prior to adding the router.

Yeah, I don't care about law enforcement. I just care about Rapidshare! :D
It all depends on what yu want to do but you can be blocked and or tracked based on your Sympatico/Rogers ID.
