How do you do affirmative action, DEI programs etc., as you stated, without quotas? Please be specific in your replies. Have the courage of your convictions.
I won't speak to affirmative action in the US, as I am not American.
But DEI programs are not quota programs.
It is commonly misunderstood that way, but it isn't.
Also hiring quotas are illegal in Canada.
They involve many initiatives.
One or more of the below can be implemented. (List below is not exhaustive)
- You have general corporate commitments to increase representation of minorities in leadership and workforce, without a number target.
- You have general corporate commitments to increase representation of minorities in leadership and workforce, aiming for a % target within X years.
- You have anti-discrimination training programs.
- You have professional clubs and networking groups in the workplace (Eg: Women in business groups etc) that people belonging to those minority groups can network, and connect.
- You have corporate commitments to reduce pay gaps by a certain percentage. (Organizations set up DEI councils or departments that track and report on these metrics.)
- You have mentorship or sponsorship programs for underrepresented employees.
- You recognize and celebrate diversity - for example a Pride potluck during LGBTQ pride week etc.,
- You have organizations implementing accessibility improvements to the workspace, so disabled employees can have better mobility and access.
- etc etc
DEI programs aim to create fair, inclusive, and equitable workplaces by removing barriers that disadvantage certain groups and ensuring everyone has equal access to opportunities.
