Hey All,

I've been trying to keep things discreet with my phone and all, but I'm too paranoid. So I'm looking for a "disposable" phone or something to that effect (not skype). Does anyone know where I can get a cheap one from say a gas station or something like that? Also, If I get a calling card, will my same number show up?

Thanks,

KJ

is ~$50 for throw-away + $25+ for fill-up card "cheap"?

if so, then rogers, fido, etc. are all options

if not, then a pre-paid phone card can be used. you call the 1-800 number and follow the instructions. your number (from the phone you're using) won't show up.

Distant Voyeur has got it right. I got a free phone for buying $100 of air time. Activated it from another phone. There is no record of who I am, and I can't be found on 'reverse-look-up'. Still, for those sp's who want an unblocked number, my number is unblocked. I can erase numbers I have called, or numbers that have called me back. PetroCan phones are about the same. Woohoo, no more freezing phone booths; no more collections of quarters.

7-11.
Pre-activated number. Call from a payphone to activate the account. Minutes last for a year. 20 cents a minute.
Occasionally get a sale around this time of year.
I vouch for 7-11's pay as you go too.

The phones are charged and ready to use out the door. Nothing is in your name. Not sure what the other posters mean by activating it from a pay phone. I have two and they were both ready to use when purchased at the store. One last December and one a year before that.

The same Rogers GSM network is used. Voice mail and call display is included.

In the past near Christmas (probably real soon if not now) they give you a free phone with the purchase of a $100 top up. Top ups good for a year as mentioned.

Free phone is bare bones Nokia candy bar style but does the job. Excellent signal strength and charge life. SIM card can be placed in any unlocked GSM phone or locked rogers phone. Not locked Fido though.

If you put the 7-11 SIM in to your Rogers phone, then Rogers can "associate" that phone's IMEI (serial) number with the SIM card, so that's not something you should ever do if you're trying to hide from LE.

For anonymity's sake, the 7-11 SIM should only ever be used with the 7-11 phone, and the 7-11 phone should only ever be used with the 7-11 SIM.

Also, if you leave the phone on when not in use, they can track it's location by cell towers to find out where you live. So, you should only turn on the 7-11 phone after leaving home.

Of course, if you're that paranoid, you already know all this.

Voting for 7-11 phone. I bought one a little while ago (Sept) and the total bill was $144. That included an "upgraded" flip phone (which is still pretty crappy) and $130 worth of airtime.

It worked right out of the box. I didn't call from a payphone or anything. If you paid cash, the only way anyone could find you is from the store video when you buy the phone. <-- an idea stolen from another thread on this same topic, I wouldn't have thought of it as it seems a little paranoid :)

I have a tracfone here in the states that is the equivalent. When I am not using it, I keep the sim card in a completely separate place than the phone. That way, if anyone were to ever find the phone (or the card which is TINY) it would be useless without it's mate.

hey, it could be worse, in Iran they have spy pigeons with invisible string attached.

"Last year, Iran issued a formal protest over the use of espionage by the United States to produce a key intelligence report on the country's controversial nuclear programme."
