A young girl shot herself to death at Yellowstone Yellowstone National Park on Saturday morning.

According to a statement from the National Park Service, a woman called 911 on Saturday morning and told dispatchers that her daughter had shot herself with a handgun at the Grant Village Campground.

Emergency medical staff attempted resuscitation, but were unsuccessful and the girl later died.

The Park Service said that the girl’s identity would not be released until extended family members had been identified. Additional details were expected to be made available on Sunday afternoon.

An investigation was ongoing.

In 2009, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) added an amendment to the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act that allowed concealed weapons to be carried in national parks. President Barack Obama signed the Credit CARD Act into law in 2010.

I'm not sure the failure here is entirely on allowing guns in parks.

So C-M it is indeed a tragedy, but has what to do with firearms being allowed in U.S. National Parks? Sort of like if people were not allowed in National Parks - people would never be attacked by bears in National Parks.

that's deflecting from the topic. firearms have no places in national parks. park rangers and other staff can deal with the problems of bears

You know that Yellowstone is almost 9000 square kilometers, right?

How many rangers do you think they have?

This tragic incident is due to the negligence of the parents ( mother ). She should have secured the gun as it is her responsibility to do so. I would not be surprised if she is charged with negligence. The national parks in the USA are not the parks in Canada. Every type of crime you will find in the big city, you will find in the national parks of the USA. There are two and four legged predictors in these parks. I saw one 20/20 segment where in Yosemite National Park in California the rangers had to deal with murders, rapes, kidnappings, thefts, vandalism and hit and runs.

Hmmm... I agree with Mr. Ceiling Cat's perspective: This issue here sounds like a lack of appropriate parental supervision. In my view, firearms in National Parks and gun permits issued to blind people are secondary topics for other discussions. Sincerely, Jon .

Your argument deserves all the serious consideration its red comic sans typeface warrants. I love how people harp on about how it ain't the law abiding responsible gun owners who fuck up, so why penalize them? In fact, law abiding responsible gun owners are NEVER the cause of accidents. It's a brilliantly closed circle, since the second some asshat fucks up, they are no longer properly law abiding and responsible, so the batting record stays at 1000.

If the mother left a handful of prescription medication on the kitchen table and the child ingest the pills and did harm to herself.

or

The mother has left the child in a car with the motor running and ran inside a store to purchase milk and the child kicks the car into drive and plows into a brick wall.

or

The parent has left a firearm unsecured and accessible to a child and she does injury or death to herself.

In all three cases the mother has neglected to take appropriate action to secure the medication, vehicle, and firearm from the child and is therefore negligent. Should the incident with the firearm have happened in the home and not a National Park, she would still be negligent in her responsibilities.

Oh, indeed. Same for if the mother had left a grenade on the table. Or a flamethrower in the backseat. Those too would have been a simple sign of her negligence and nothing else. I mean, objects are just objects, right? And all are equally useful and necessary, right?
