except that it clearly didn't hit the guys throat.

let's not forget Martin Havlat had a whopping 5 game suspension for kicking a guy with his skate- and it was his second kicking infraction in the same season!

and more in commmon- the same Martin Havlat two-handed style swung his stick at and directly struck Mark Recchi's face in similar fashion to Simon on Hollweg ... Havlat got 2 games for that!!! this too, in the same season as the abovementioned suspensions!!!

Simon's punishment is just. but, unfair is at is, the stars of the NHL never get proper discipline. Emery, Bertuzzi, Havlat, and this big one:

Gary Suter in the Olympics (Nagano '98)- another wow! suspension of 4 games for a real cross check to Paul Kariya's face, ending in Kariya needing alot of dental work and OVER 8 months of inactivity due to post concussion syndrome. Paul Kariya returned eight months later but saw his production fall from 100 points in the 1998-99 season to almost 1/2 the amount, ie- 57pts in 2001-02. He probably hasn't fully recovered from that hit until 2005!!!

Please... not unless his abuser also used a hockey stick across his head. Next people are going to say that Hollweg look like his abuser and that's why he did it.

Simon screwed up... but give him credit for admitting he was an idiot. Of course... if they had called Hollweg for a boarding penalty in the first place... this whole thing never would have happened.

I was being sarcastic. Simon's head hit the glass as a result of a clean hit by Hollweg. No need for retribution. I have to admit that I preferred Simon's sort of apology to Bertuzzi's crying game.

I also believe that any player, no matter how valuable he is, who deliberately attempts to hurt a fellow player or official deserves to be treated harshly.

I'm tired of other players making excuses for these people. BTW, I thought fighting was supposed to get rid of all these cheap shots.

It helps but the instigator penalty has to go. Case in point, last night's Ducks-'Naucks game. Dustin Penner cross-checks a Vancouver player from behind into the boards, injuring him. No penalty is called. Kevin Beixa(SP?) skates up to Penner & gives him a tap on the back of the leg(as play goes up the ice), Penner turns around & they both drop their gloves & go. Beixa gets the instigator penalty & the Ducks score on the PP. Penner did get his clock cleaned...for those scoring at home. This happened in the 1st period & led to a long, rough, penalty filled game. The point is, the instigator penalty discourages the players from policing themselves.

Chris Simon is the third player to be suspended for the remainder of the current season. But the 25-game minimum attached to his suspension makes it effectively the most severe suspension in hockey history.

I'm glad to see Ted Nolan stick up for Simon. the penalty was too harsh when comparing to any of the following:

Martin Havlat- 2 game suspension for kicking a guy with his skate.
Martin Havlat- 2 game suspension for two-handing Mark Recchi (Simon style)
Martin Havlat- 5 games suspension for kicking a guy with his skate.
*note- all above happened in same season*
Gary Suter (NHL governed - Nagano '98)- 4 games suspension for cross check to Paul Kariya's face. P Kariya had to sit out of hockey for over 8 months with his injurey.
Ray Emery- 3 games suspension for driving a 12 pound Goalie stick into a players face.

Here are some shorter suspensions than Simon's - however, all are brutally worse offences...

The Rest Of The Season (23 games)
Marty McSorley of the Boston Bruins, for knocking out Vancouver's Donald Brashear by swinging a stick at his head in March, 2000. McSorley misses 23 regular season games. Done with clear intent. McSorley chased Brashear down around the ice for seconds before the strike.

The Rest Of The Season (20 games)
Todd Bertuzzi of the Vancouver Canucks, for serious injuries sustained by Colorado's Steve Moore when Bertuzzi jumped him from behind in March, 2004. Also done with clear intent. Moore was chased down for 80 ft. of ice surface before the strike.

20 games
Brad May of the Phoenix Coyotes, for a slash to the head of Columbus' Steve Heinze in November, 2000 injury resulting.

15 games
Dave Brown of the Philadelphia Flyers, for cross-checking Tomas Sandstrom of the New York Rangers across the face and breaking his jaw in November, 1987.

12 games
Matt Johnson of the Los Angeles Kings, for deliberately injuring the New York Rangers' Jeff Beukeboom in November, 1998. Beukeboom suffered a concussion and never played again.

11 games
Owen Nolan of the San Jose Sharks, for a hit to the head of the Dallas Stars' Grant Marshall in February, 2001. Marshall suffered spinal cord injury.

11 games (3 playoff, 8 regular season)
Tie Domi of the Toronto Maple Leafs, for knocking out Scott Niedermayer with an elbow to the head during the 2001 playoffs. Domi was suspended for the balance of the playoffs and the first eight games of the following season. Niedermayer missed the remainder of playoffs and the first 6 games of the following season with a post concussion syndrome.

10 games
the same Scott Niedermayer of the New Jersey Devils, for swinging a two hander and hitting Florida's Peter Worrell in the face with his stick in March, 2000.

Well maybe it's time to stop comparing with previous suspensions and start setting new standards. Simon is as good a place to begin as with any.

Not exactly true. Don Murdoch was suspended for the entire 1978-79 season for attempting to bring drugs across the U.S.-Canada border (cocaine). The suspension was later reduced to 40 games, still the most severe suspension given to an NHL player.

Tom Lysiak, then with the Black Hawks, also served a lengthy suspension back in the early 1980's. He received 20 games for abuse of an official when he used his stick to take the legs out from under an official who tossed him out of the face-off circle.

thanks for that blueline. i guess i meant suspensions for violence to an opposing player.

I have to agree. Far too many injuries as a result from violence as of late.

Chris Simon didn't receive suspension under the SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROGRAM which has different rules.

(boy did he ever give Hollweg a good one! did you see him today? I've seen a black-eye before, but never a black-jaw..lol)

Chris Simon at it again.... tonight against the Penguins he stomps his skate down on the ankle of Jarkko Ruuttu (while Ruuttu was already fallen on the ice) at a stoppage of play about the 6min left in the 3rd period.

I like how the telestrator caught Ron and Don covering it on HNIC...

Ron - I'll tell you another thing that's too bad, is Chris Simon- we won't show it 'cause he's your friend (to Don Cherry), and you don't want to...
Don- (interjects) No. I don't want to show it.
Ron- Maybe we'll show it with PJ Stock a little later tonight... He (Simon) stepped on ahh, Ruuttu's ... Ruttu from the Pittsburgh Penguins. So, ah, match penalty for injury.
Don- (interjects) No, I don't want to talk about it. Nope. I won't get into it. Show it later. Not with me. That's it. Are we gonna show Jeremy Reich?
Ron- ahh, yeah. (laughing)
probably one of the more important topics to address... he's clearly using his skate blade as a weapon with clear intent to injure...

Why doesn't the NHPA protect its victims from these idiots like Simon ....
Because they feel it's more important to try to protect guys from getting suspensions even when they act like idiots.

They'll protect a player from losing time when the league punishes them but they won't protect a player from losing time because another player intentionally injures him. I guess they think it looks better when they stand up to the league.

Simon is looking at about 20 for what he did last night.....5 for the slew foot, 10 for the kick and attempt to injure and you can tack on another 5 for the 'repeat offender' tag that he earned for the koko bonk on Holwegg at the end of last year

I think he's used up his priviledge of playing in the NHL.

Needs to be sent off to a ditch digging job somewhere.
