1) always make sure your tree has plenty of water (saw off 4 cm 1.5 inches from the butt when you get the tree home) putting two or three aspirin in the water supposedly helps as well. 2) there are flame retardants which can be sprayed on the tree before you bring it inside.

If you wait until dec 23rd to cut the tree, you will have a much slower burning tree. A tree that has been standing inside in dry air for most of a month burns a lot faster.

One of my uncles was a Firefighter(Fireman back then) One Christmas Eve he banged on our door at 300 am .When my dad answered he pushed him aside,grabbed our tree and threw it outside into the snow.He then collapsed sobbing.His crew had just fought a fire where 2 kids perished in a fire.He was a young dad himself at the time.

Have a friend who was sitting down when he was 12 with lots of family and someone smelled smoke and their tree had caught fire - there were able to get it out in time with minimal damage to the house - since then none of them have every had a tree in the house.
