Canada...
Does anybody else here listen to Classical Music?

If so, I was just curious if there is a file swapping site for such songs, as I do not want to use Kaaza (peer to peer) or any of the others in the media, since there is such a huge movement in the USA to go after users now, down there, for music piracy?

If you want to listen to classical music, I recommend you buy it... or better yet... go to the symphony... lay your money down... support musicians.

Then there's *modern* classical music. I wonder how a session with a SP would be with Steve Reich playing in the background;-)

Me, all I own is classical—mostly vinyl at that. The little I've seen on P2P nets or CDDBs has been hopelessly misnamed, which makes it difficult to share or search. The software's optimized for: Performer, Song name, Album and just doesn't cope with: Composer, Title, Popular title, Catalogue number, Orchestra, soloist(s)
And then there's the Mac thing.

Couldn't agree more. There's nothing like listening to live classical music. Hmm, are there any secluded spots in RTH to make extracurricular music?

I've never come across any file swapping services for classical music. I've been to a few sites that sell files, but for the $$$ I'd rather just buy the CD outright.

But even on a very high end system ($100K+) you still don't get the same richness of sound that you do with a live performance. So in the end, as others have noted, you are better off laying down the cash and going to live performances. Unfortunately we live in a city with a poor excuse of an orchestra. We do have a good opera scene though and some of the smaller groups like Tafelmusik are great!

Hit any or all of the downtown music stores and check for large racks of collections from an individual label that is well respected (do some searches, there was another thread on a similar topic not too long ago). Find one or two recordings where you recognize the Composer, hopefully the piece, and the name of the Orchestra, or better still that and the conductor. Buy one or 2 discs and evaluate the quality yourself.

If you are completely unable to do so, ask one of the sales staff. Explain what you are trying to do and they will usually bend over backwards to help. Not shilling, but the HMV at 333 Yonge has a great staff.

One trip doing just that netted me 4 discs that were being cleared out as the label that produced them had discontinued them, and the store had bought the remaining stock at a tremendous discount. I liked them so much that I came back, bought another 10 or so, and ended up with... 26 (sorry, had to go count) from that label alone. All big name, mostly european orchestras, well know works, all digital recordings of great quality. I think I averaged less than $7 per CD.

Happy Hunting!

Canada...
Thanks everyone for the great advice!

I agree with many of the points here and I own a number of CD's which I am converting to mp3 for my player on my mac G4 dual processor.

I was just curious about the P2P classical scene...I don't mind paying for CDs, it is time consuming hunting for good recordings.

I love going to live concerts, when time permits since I was a passionate violinist early on in my life...now I have gone corporate...

the good old days....

Use the internet to save time. There are many sites like:

www.CDNOW.com
www.TowerRecords.com
www.CdUniverse.com
www.AllMusicGuide.com

Many of these sites have song clips you can listen to, to help your search, and you can order them online. Classical music is not that expensive anyways. I use KazaaLite and WinMx for p2p and hard to find music can be readily found there most of the time.

Public Library. I never have any regrets.
